THE SHOT OPENS UP TO SHOW HIS GIRLFRIEND ON THE TOWEL BESIDE HIM. SHE IS WEARING AN OLD-FASHIONED DEEP SEA DIVING SUIT, COMPLETE WITH HELMET AND BOOTS.

Don't know if it has been done before, but David is probably right that it would work better as a postcard.
You could have the girlfriend buried up to the neck in sand as an alternative although its a bit predictable. Or, wrapped up tightly in one of those windbreaker things. Or, even more stupid encased in a lilo sandwich.
....or wrapped up in bandages like a mummy. 
The girlfriend could be just a pair of legs.
