Paul Weller is one of the dullest musicians alive. Yeah, The Jam were good, but that was bloody ages ago.

Yeah, the Jam are real favourites of mine but Weller's solo stuff is really workman like.

Though this track is ace.

Back on topic slightly - Morrissey was asked about The Smiths rhythm section and said something like 'Yeah, Rick and Bruce are fantastic' (they're The Jam's rhythm of course). He also compared both Joyce and Rourke to 'parts of a lawnmower', easily replaced.

Famously Moz sacked Rourke from the band briefly (as he was a drug addict) but sticking a post it note to Rourke car saying 'Andy, you have now left The Smiths'.

A film about Moz would be brilliantly funny.

Yeah, and Paul Weller has only written 4 decent songs in 20 years.

Wow, you'll be pleased to know that I agree with that statement (or irritated that I agree with your "can of worms" provocation).

And we've gone somewhat off-topic, haven't we? That said, Seefacts started the thread and Aaron's not around to spank us! (Though, referring to the above Moz lyrics, I hear him chastising me in my brain.)

The Style Council were pretty hit and miss too. I saw them live and it wasn't exactly the greatest gig I've seen. Some great songs, yes, but a lot of crap as well.

Yeah, their Best Of is far as you need to go.

And who told Weller to start wearing Edinburgh Woollen Mill style sweaters.

Incidentally Griff - was it you who mentioned Julian Cope's double autobiography Head Up/Repossessed? I've just started to read it. I also picked up his second album 'Fried' which is superb.

Ooh-now who would play him though?! I really haven't a clue who could pull it off . . .

Yeah, we have veered slightly.

Indeed, but I can imagine Moz being asked which actor should play him and replying, "Well, there really isn't anyone talented or attractive enough".

Actually . . .hmm . . .maybe he could . . ?

He's probably right.

Please, god no.

Marr would need a cool actor to portray him. John Simm? He did play Bernard Sumner in 24 Hour Party People of course.

Ha! I actually quite like Brands stand up.

This thread has been well and truly hijacked. :P

Talking of funniest non-comedians, ahem... Other very witty lyricists are Paul Heaton and Billy Bragg.

Billy... 'The sound of happy couples coupling happily in the park/Whilst you and I sat down to tea I remember you said to me/That no amount of poetry will mend this broken heart/But you can put the hoover 'round if you want to make a start...'

Heaton... 'They said if I wrote the perfect love song that you would take me back/Well I wrote it, but I lost it/Now will you take me back anyway?'

Heaton is ace. In terms miserableness he makes Moz look like Kris Akabusi.

Heaton on the split of the Beautiful South: "Split due to musical similarities"

And all the stuff like 'and the PRS cheques that you bring' from 'Song For Whoever.'

Now way, they've done some great stuff. Mixed bag yeah, but every album has some good tracks on.

At least they were honest enough to have a compilation album entitled, 'Now That's What I Call Quite Good'. And Heaton had the honesty to admit that The Beautiful South's music was not the style of stuff he would listen to himself. That takes real honesty. They did a grand job and him and Rotherway wrote some of the really great tunes of the last 20 years. (I may be wrong, but I think in terms of sales, they're the 2nd most successful British songwriting duo after Lennon & McCartney.)

Worth listening to the 'Bard of Barking' is you haven't. His non-political songs are generally finer than his political songs.

"I saw two shooting stars last night/I wished on them but they were only satellites/It's wrong to wish on space hardware/I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care."
