Yeah, the Jam are real favourites of mine but Weller's solo stuff is really workman like.

Back on topic slightly - Morrissey was asked about The Smiths rhythm section and said something like 'Yeah, Rick and Bruce are fantastic' (they're The Jam's rhythm of course). He also compared both Joyce and Rourke to 'parts of a lawnmower', easily replaced.

Famously Moz sacked Rourke from the band briefly (as he was a drug addict) but sticking a post it note to Rourke car saying 'Andy, you have now left The Smiths'.

A film about Moz would be brilliantly funny.

Incidentally Griff - was it you who mentioned Julian Cope's double autobiography Head Up/Repossessed? I've just started to read it. I also picked up his second album 'Fried' which is superb.

At least they were honest enough to have a compilation album entitled, 'Now That's What I Call Quite Good'. And Heaton had the honesty to admit that The Beautiful South's music was not the style of stuff he would listen to himself. That takes real honesty. They did a grand job and him and Rotherway wrote some of the really great tunes of the last 20 years. (I may be wrong, but I think in terms of sales, they're the 2nd most successful British songwriting duo after Lennon & McCartney.)

Worth listening to the 'Bard of Barking' is you haven't. His non-political songs are generally finer than his political songs.
