zooo you are safe from a beating, it was established earlier in the thread that it is only male F&S fans who deserve the massive kicking. Females know no better.

I wouldn't say fan, but when I was a kid I liked some of their stuff. The silent witness parody, "Witless Silence", was v. funny. Haven't seen any recent F&S material, though.

Is that beatworthy?

Family Guy

I used to hate Family Guy more than you. But I started watching it and it is actually quite funny. In no way is it subtle or clever but neither are any of the jokes/puns and insults that get thrown around this board but we all still stay because it can be funny, just plain simple funny. And that's Family Guy - take of the writer's cap and sit back and enjoy it.

An affection for warmedy, good natured comedy or other forms of comical niceness.

Any comedy that makes gay men shreek "go girl friend," and women sagely nod, before saying "that's so true,"

Any comedy where some one says he's not racist.....and then people humorlessly agree before being racist.

I could not truly love anybody who did not like Father Ted. French & Saunders fans, on the other hand, deserve a good beating.

Hmm, I may have that on my gravestone.

You don't count. I think your brain is slightly faulty, and it just likes anything a bit shit.

:D

The only saving grace is that some of cutaways can be quite funny, but write a f**king sketch show - not a sitcom - if that's what you want.

All the good bits are held back by the terrible set up of the whole thing.

Family Guy is great. The cutaways wouldn't work outside of the other parts of narrative. It's not a sketch show masquerading as a sitcom. People who claim it is, really haven't watched it properly.

How does this work in narrative:

(out of nowhere) 'You're as ignorant as Popeye!'

(cut to Popeye in the doctors)

Sir, these are tumours in your arms.

Funny, but not part of the story.

Is that really how you decide whether or not you enjoy a show?
'This doesn't fit into the proper structure.'

Stop being a writer for FIVE MINUTES!

(You still wouldn't find it funny, I know, but use that as a reason, not the fecking 'it's not a proper sitcom' stuff.)

:)

My issue is the Family stuff is always rubbish. The asides like the one I posted were occasionally quite amusing.

I do like you think I might just go 'This doesn't fit into the proper structure.' and throw my monnacle on the floor.

But it wouldn't work as a standalone 'sketch' - or at least it wouldn't work in the same way - without Popeye having been mentioned by one of the characters.

Like Chris's foray into the world of modelling, back in season 2 I think. The cutaways to Kate Moss floating out of an open window when there's a slight breeze, or falling through gaps between floorboards, wouldn't work if it hadn't already been set up that models are shockingly thin.

The beauty's in that out-of-the-blue short, sharp shock of surreality. But if you don't like surreal, then I guess it's understandable that you wouldn't appreciate those parts of Family Guy.

Hee! That is exactly what I was imagining.
I enjoyed it quite a lot. :)

I think it looks worse in the narrative. As a sketch, it does work though. surely they could have had one of the characters watching Popeye if they wanted to get the gag in that badly?

I do like surreal, and the satire elements of the show are quite good (re: culture, telly etc) but the premise is quite dull and charmless.

I did throw it on the floor. It was a bit like that time I was a contestant on Wheel of Fortune (cut to reasonably something funny, but totally unrelated)

And Stewie's line of 'Do we have a clip . . . I thought we had a clip? . . . no? Fine." just smacked 'If we take the piss out of our lack of structure first, no one else can'.

Ah well. We seem to disagree on almost every point regarding the show. But fair enough! :)

You've just summed up the futility of talking on a forum!

Interesting re: Red Dwarf in Griff's opening post. 'Oh it's sci-fi - they're all geeks.' Rather than concentrating on the fact it's packed full of funny lines. Father Ted is about priests, but you don't dismiss fans with 'Oh, they must be bible bashers!!'.
