Empire Magazine's recent Greatest 500 films poll contained some of the not so greatest comedies . Most of these got better placings than The Holy Grail and The Life of Brian. Get ready for em
Superbad - Some Like it Hot - Little Miss Sunshine - ANCHORMAN - School of Rock and Hot Fuzz . Plus countless others I can't be bothered to remember.
500 Greatest Films
Link?
What was number one....?
I think The Godfather was top of that poll. Shawshank was in the top 3 as well.
I wouldn't put any of those above Life Of Brian. Shawshank IS a great film.
Hot Fuzz is awful whilst there is no way that Superbad or School of Rock should be anywhere within that list. However, in addition to voters such as 50 film critics and 150 actors/directors/writers etc, 10,000 Empire readers also voted. Which could explain some of the shocking placings. Top 10 are:
1. The Godfather
2. Raiders Of The Lost Ark
3. The Empire Strikes Back
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Jaws
6. Goodfellas
7. Apocalypse Now
8. Singin' In The Rain
9. Pulp Fiction
10. Fight Club
Highest placings for films that might be considered 'comedies':
12. The Apartment
26. Dr Strangelove
27. Some Like It Hot
42. Kind Hearts And Coronets? (Never seen it so not sure if it could be classed as a comedy?)
43. The Big Lebowski
48. This Is Spinal Tap
58. His Girl Friday
63. Sunset Boulevard (Comedy?)
68. Annie Hall
73. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
76. Manhattan
80. The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp
87. The King Of Comedy
88. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
90. When Harry Met Sally
100. Network
Comedies which might/should have charted higher include:
115. Blazing Saddles. 118. Withnail And I. 135. Duck Soup. 179. Toy Story 2. 203. Life Of Brian. 209. Local Hero. 231. Shaun Of The Dead. 279. National Lampoon's Animal House. 368. Airplane. 374. Hot Fuzz (though not for me). 375. Four Weddings And A Funeral. 381. Monty Python And The Holy Grail. 445. Dumb And Dumber.
1. The Godfather
2. Raiders Of The Lost Ark
3. The Empire Strikes Back
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Jaws
6. Goodfellas
7. Apocalypse Now
8. Singin' In The Rain
9. Pulp Fiction
10. Fight Club
Pretty Bang on I think.

It definitely should.
And I'm unsure why people are surprised at the high position of Some Like It Hot?? It's funny; what more does it need to be?
No Pulp Fiction Gav?
I love that film. The Usual Suspects would be right up there for me as well.
I would have thought Pulp Fiction would be right up Gav's street.
It's good but there are alot better films around.

It's got Bruce Willis in which is always good.
Like I say it's good. But not top ten.

That, is a fantastic film. And it is a (Ealing) comedy starring Alec Guinness in 8 roles.
I'm glad I stopped reading Empire.
Ah, as long as you like it Gav.
I used to love Empire magazine sooooo much.
But stopped reading about 5 years ago.
Singing In The Rain? Indiana Jones?? A star Wars flick??? Jaws???? Sweet jesus . . . I mean, some of those are great films, but in the top ten? Some people are just plain foolish.
Jaws IS fantastic.
Indiana Jones SHOULD be in the top ten!!
What would be in yours then, Stotters?
Please don't say Battleship Potemkin.
