Stephen Fry on America Page 2

Oh wow. The fishies!!!!

I need a good week or so there.

I was there for two weeks the only time I went - would you believe I managed to swing the first week as a paid business trip?! - and I have to say it was unbelievably hard to adjust to normal life when I got back.

OO, ace. I saw a few TV programmes about them building that place, but not actually finished. *strokes the screen*

Not that it's a competition, but I went there on a competition win when I was 21. First class flight and 2 weeks in the Stratosphere. They even threw in a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon.

Woo hoo! That is awesome Dave!

Two weeks in Vegas is about 10 days more than my liver and I can stand, but it's a fun place to visit with friends. The shows are getting better all the time.

The Grand Canyon is definitely worth a day or two and you might as well drive over to LA and San Diego while you're in the area.

There's a lot of truth in what Mr. Fry wrote. Sounds like it'll be an interesting series.

Show-wise, I saw Jay Leno and Tom Jones when I was out there. Both fantastic.

I could have gone to see Jerry Seinfeld too, but the people I was with didn't know who he was, and wouldn't go. How annoying is that.

I saw the Canyon, and I was kind of underwhelmed. I know, that says more about me than about it. But I did love driving across that desert.

Ditto.

It's quite impressive at first. But after that, it's just a big hole in the ground, each mile largely indistinguishable from the next.

All the Cirque du Soleil shows are amazing. I want to check out the new Beatles show they've created.

And the canyon is a big hole, but it's a big, multicolored hole 15 miles across and a mile deep. Pretty impressive in my book.

I did a 3 day train journey from East (Washington D.C.) to West Coast (San Diego). The changes in the landscape were amazing, America is a huge country, much bigger than the Isle Of Man. Seriously though, from industrialized areas such as Pennsylvania through to the midwest then the great plains, Colorado with Rocky Mts in distance, Arizona is spectacular as well.

I've made the 4-day, 2700-mile drive across the country 5 or 6 times and the changing scenery never fails to impress me. I live on the edge of the last green part of the country. Drive west on Interstate 10 and you won't see much but rocks and mountains and desert until you reach the Pacific coast in California about 1300 miles from here. I love the desert.
