Where have the comedy films gone? Page 5

And I might be the only person who enjoyed A Cock And Bull Story which I thought was amazing.

No, we're two. :)

I think Withnail And I is genius.

I've enjoyed a fair few comedy films in recent years - Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine - but the one that really worked for me was Napoleon Dynamite which nearly killed me through laughing. I like Sideways too although that is a gentler more character-based humour (except where the girl smacks the guy with the motorbike helmet...). And I might be the only person who enjoyed A Cock And Bull Story which I thought was amazing.

Still hating the Pegg films though.

I didn't enjoy Napoleon Dynamite, Sideways or A Cock And Bull Story so maybe they've got something in common with Withnail & I.

I loved Superbad and enjoyed The 40 Year Old Virgin immensely. I haven't seen Little Miss Sunshine but I think I'd enjoy it.

And Pegg is brilliant, you are just wrong on that one.

I liked Cock and Bull!

How can you hate Shaun of the Dead?

I thought Napolean Dynamite was the most boring film I've seen in years.

Because, unfortunately, they got bored half way through writing it and let a reasonably good start fall to shit.

They're certainly all more ambitious in their own ways than Superbad and The 40 Year Old Virgin. I mean I liked both of those, but sometimes I want a film which isn't just about knob gags.

Nope.
I could almost kind of understand someone saying that about Hot Fuzz.
But I'm afraid Shaun is a masterpiece of perfection!

Agreed, except for the "reasonably good start" bit.

I've not seen Hot Fuzz, largely on the, ahem, 'strength', of Shaun Of The Dead. It just unravelled.

*gives quizzical look* Me too. I just didn't think they were funny. A Cock And Bull Story had its moments, but the other two are thoroughly overrated.

I honestly don't understand where you're getting the unravelly thing from.

It was good all the way through. Where did it go wrong for you?

Haha!

I really don't remember exactly. I just know, every time I watch it, that I feel it's a good start. Nice and tight, all controlled. Then it just kind of ... collapses. Loose ends frey. The funny disappears. And then the ending is so rushed and anticlimactic that it just leaves me feeling cold and unsatisfied.

I should also add, just for clarification, that I saw the film long before I saw Spaced, so I had no prejudices or preconceptions over what may come.

Ah ok. Fair enough!

I mean I disagree, obviously. But, maybe it's the same as the way I feel about From Dusk Till Dawn. I like it until the vampires come along and ruin it.

I would ask which loose ends you are talking about, but I doubt you want to keep on and on talking about a film you don't even like. So I'll let you off :)

Agreed with zooo about From Dusk Till Dawn, the first half of that film is so much better than the second. (Obviously I count Salma Hayek's dance as being in the first half.) The opening scene where they hold up the store is awesome.

Oh I don't mind. And you can ask. But it's long enough since I watched it that I don't remember.

Next time I see it, I'll make a note and let you know.
