Does the best sitcom win a prize? Do we get to send a turd in the post to Little Miss Jocelyn?
Universally Loved And Loathed Page 25
Viz is one of the most successful magazines in British publishing history. In its heyday (late 80s) it was selling a million copies per issue. It's a good deal better known than some of the TV shows on the list.
Damn if I'd remembered I'd have nominated The Onion.
Aaron - re the Colbert Report (which I don't think I've ever seen either), I didn't say the poll had to be British comedy.
Graham - The winning sitcom gets nothing but glory. Posting turds to the loser is optional.

Alright, well I'll rephrase that then. Those who have any experience of it, in any medium, seem to be extremely scarce. Basically just you and sooty. And we all know how much his opinion is worth.

I know. But does it not make it a little unfair if it's not even available in this country by legal means? I.e. you only actually see it if you've hunted it down specifically. And you'd only hunt it out if you actually like it. No?
(Presumably you'd have stumbled across it initially by chance, or on recommendation from someone else.)
Really, are me and sooty the only people on BSG who have heard of Viz? That can't be right. I mean, Perry's actually written for it, for starters.
Of course we've heard of the f**king magazine.
I thought this thread was about TV shows. Radio at a stretch.
Quote: zooo @ September 20 2008, 12:58 AM BSTI'm afraid I really like Sex and the City (not as a comment on 'modern women', just as an entertaining show. And not as a fecking comedy either.)
I only hate it now because it made me want an Oscar de la Renta dress really badly, which I later found out cost 300 trillion of a really strong currency.
But it was entertaining. I thought.
And you'd only hunt it out if you actually like it. No?
Well, that works for me. If someone likes it enough to nominate it, and there are no naysayers, it's in.

Viz is available the whole world over, me and Griff are I'm sure not the only ones that have heard of it.
It would be a shame to promote only the inoffensive, populist and bland.
n.b. yet again you seem to needlessly insult me.

I expect most people have heard of Viz. I know I have. But not necessarily read or seen it in any medium. I know I haven't. The point is that the only people online this evening who seem to have ever had any first-hand knowledge of it, like it. And there's only 2 of them. So is it really a fair addition to the universal list?
It also had 3-6 seasons of cartoons on Channel 4, including some surprisingly big names.
Ignorance is nothing to be proud of.
Quote: Griff @ September 20 2008, 1:02 AM BSTNO. THE POINT IS TO FIND SHOWS WHICH SOME PEOPLE LOVE ENOUGH TO NOMINATE, EVEN THE OBJECTORS DON'T ACTUALLY MIND, AND NOBODY ACTUALLY HATES.
Oh, then I withdraw my comment. *opens arms to Julia, more in hope than anything*
Quote: Aaron @ September 20 2008, 1:03 AM BSTI have to question Viz. Based on the number of people online this evening, the only few people to have even heard of it, like it. It really doesn't seem fair to include something which so few people have seen (or indeed read).
As for The Daily Show, bah. I don't feel I've seen enough to say I really hate it that much, but it's not really funny.
And is The Colbert Report even broadcast in this country? I don't recall ever seeing it in my TV guide.
I've never seen any of these to base an opinion on. But I could hate them.

And yet again you fail to read posts. EXPERIENCE of Viz. NOT merely the KNOWLEDGE of its existence.
I wish I'd thought to nominate that chicken documentary Vic Reeves made. Nobody saw the bastard but it was brilliant.

You're just making a mockery of the whole thread concept now!

The rules said "please nominate comedy (sketch, sitcom, film, stand-up...)". I guess I hoped that the "...", and the inclusion of "stand-up", indicated "any format you can think of really". But I can understand your confusion.
But anyway. My thread my rules. I'll scrap Viz if someone says they've read or watched it, and they don't like it.
I wish I'd thought to nominate that chicken documentary Vic Reeves made. Nobody saw the bastard but it was brilliant.
It would have been a great nomination.
