Aaron, you head up a British sitcom site and you've only seen a couple of episodes of Partridge, and only series one of Red Dwarf?! Shame on you boy! Red Dwarf leaps up in quality from series 2-6; I insist you search out an episode from series thee titled 'Marooned'; its basically two men in a room talking, but it's one of my favourite episdoes of anything ever. Wtch it Aaron-WATCH IT-! Though I have a feeling you may ignore me.
Top 3 Over rated British sitcoms. Page 4
Quote: zooo @ September 16 2008, 11:38 PM BSTOverrated shouldn't just mean 'quite a lot of people I know like it but I don't'. There's got to be more to it than that.
Zooo, in her stumbling bumbling way, has hit upon the flaw in this thread. It seems to me just people bashing sitcoms they don't like but others do. For me, I think most of the venerated and highly regarded sitcoms are venerated for a reason.

..Fawlty Towers is probably the most overrated sitcom of all time. Yes, it's good, but no way is it the best Brit sitcom of all time, like a lot of people think it is....The joke-rate of Fawlty is surprisingly low, when compared to these other shows.
Trolling, trolling, trolling...
What we really need here is some kind of definitive list of 'rated' sitcoms.
Anybody got such a thing to hand?

Off the top of my head it would include Porridge, Steptoe and Son, Hancock, Fawlty Towers, I'm Alan Partridge, Spaced, The Office, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Dad's Army and Only Fools and Horses. All highly rated and, in my opinion, deservedly so.
1) Was never a massive Abfab fan. The characters genuinely annoyed me.
2) Fawlty Towers was basically a cheesey, hackneyed farce made watchable by the brilliant John Cleese.
3) And I'll probably get shot here but I don't think Dad's Army was as great as people remember. Some of the acting was truly abysmal. See Ian Lavender in the "Don't tell him, Pike!" bit. He completely ruins that scene's believability by smirking like a twat.
4) Nighty Night. I bloody hate that show. Great performances, slick writing, but I HATE it.
Quote: Electric Cornflakes @ September 17 2008, 2:07 AM BSTFawlty Towers - still enjoyable but too very slapstick
How anyone can object to a good bit of slapstick is beyond me.

I wasn't old enough to watch any of either when first broadcast. And have you SEEN the price of the DVDs? Christ.
But I'm working on them. Slowly.

I hope that this is a dig at that specific farce, rather than farce in general. *glares*
They seem to be showing quite a bit of Red Dwarf on Dave at the moment, if you're interested, Aaron.
You're rising to his bait, John. What you have to remember about Aaron is that he's an agent provocateur, as his many French friends would say. He says stuff just for effect.

Yes, but I like to watch things in order. They only ever seem to show S6-8.
And he wears saucy underwear.

Get them on DVD then and watch them in order!

1. Only Fools and Horses. It is not bad... but definitely not as good as people claim it to be.
2. Father Ted. - never made past first series.
and basically anything 60s and much from beginning of 70s. It is just dated and not funny anymore.
Quote: Aaron @ September 16 2008, 11:02 PM BSTRed Dwarf. (Possibly - have only seen series 1.)
LOL. Admittedly, the first and maybe the second series are not ace at all, especially the first, which was dull. I gave the first three discs to a friend, and he later confessed he could not get past the second series. I practically made him watch the third series... and a day later he called and asked for more.

thank you!
1. Dad's Army
2. Ab Fab
3. 'Allo 'Allo!
