Cheltenham Literature Festival 2008

I've been sent some details about this. It's not technically a comedy festival, but as Terry Jones, Alexei Sayle, Sue Perkins, Dawn French, Tony Robinson, Alan Carr, Richard Curtis, John Lloyd, Frank Skinner, Alistair McGowan, Harry Hill, The News Quiz team and others are amongst those attending there is certainly more than a hint of it there.

Plus, I know some of you write serious stuff too... so here is the details for anyone interested:

"With its signature blend of award winning writers, world-renowned thinkers and international star names The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival is a hotbed of debate and discussion with a unique regency style. In this year's literary line-up Man Booker Prize winners rub shoulders with the finest classically trained actors, whilst top class comedians appear alongside leading political figures. With more than 450 writers and over 350 events this promises to be an exhilarating ten day celebration of the written word".

Sadly I see the Blackadder event is already sold-out.

I'm assuming the appearance of Alexei Sayle means he's got a new book coming out. Hope so. One of the best comedians I ever did see and a fine writer to boot.

His collections of short stories are great, particularly The Dog Catcher.

Yeah, one of my favourite short stories is 'My Life's Work', from Barcelona Plates. Very funny stuff. Any writer should read it!

I used to love Alexei Sayle's Stuff. He had some great writers on in it, including David Renwick.

And Linehan/Matthews. Weren't they on this as well, later on?

Went to this last year and had the pleasure of (briefly) meeting Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris.

Nice. Where did they fall on the charming/hostile scale?

I only spoke to Iannucci briefly - he was very rushed as he was 'creative director' of the whole festival (or something shit like that). Morris was very charming. He replaced Charlie Brooker who dropped out because he was filming Screen Wipe which, as a huge Morris fan, was a massive stroke of luck. Really nice guy and had a nice chat with him. Although he said he would email me and he didn't. I now hate him.

I bet you still love him really.

Yes I do, but don't tell him that.
