Mafia quickie

INT. NIGHT. ROOM.

A GROUP OF MAFIA DONS ARE DISCUSSING BUSINESS.

DON 1: What about Salvatore?

DON 2: I think he should be whacked, he knows too much.

DON 3: I dunno, I dunno.

DON 2: I wouldn't wanna take any risks.

DON 3: But he's a stand up guy just like his old man.

SFX KNOCK AT DOOR OF ROOM.

DON 1/2/3: (in unison) Salvatore.

A MAN DRESSED AS GUY FAWKES IS STANDING IN THE ROOM.

SALVATORE: Why did the chicken cross the road? Forgeddaboutit. A man walked into a mutha f**kin' bar.

ENDS.

I like it but I don't know why?

I don't 'get' the punchline (if there is one..) but then I don't think it's necessary to always have a traditional punch myself.

He's stand up guy Frankie, i.e. he is doing a stand up routine.

Is "Stand up guy" some kind of mafia slang as well? I'm not familiar with it (And I've watched The Godfather!).

And why is he dressed as Guy Fawkes? I really don't understand that.

A 'stand up guy' in mafia parlance is one who is loyal and doesn't rat. I have heard it in some of Scorcese films such as Goodfellas and Casino. The gag is basically a literal translation of a 'guy' (Guy Fawkes) who does stand up.

Ah! I see now!

The 'guy' bit might be a bit too subtle for people to get, but that could just be me.

I didn't get the Guy Fawkes bit either. And Salvatore would probably need a microphone and a spotlight on him to make the joke work.

I guessed the stand-up gag was coming but the 'guy' element doesn't work I think. It's too subtle. I'm not a huge fan of punny humour but I think the sketch will work if you remove the Guy Fawkes element.

The joke is that they're all dons.

Why?

Fair point Perry. Cheers guys for comments.

Nah, keep him as Guy Fawkes. Jacobean, or whatever he was, English character doing the Sopranos makes it visualy funny as well as aurally.

No parliamentary blow job jokes please.

Nige, this sketch needs to be dumped in the East river.

With concrete boots on it. :)

Obviously not south of it.
