If you need to explain it, then that's all the proof needed that it should be cut. There's still a joke without those final two words, but with them on the end you've had to explain it.
FWIW, I 'got' it (as far as meaning Protestant), but haven't heard it used as a term of reference like that previously, so it felt terribly awkward and forced.
Although I suppose it depends on where you'd be intending to use it. A pub in Northern Ireland would get it, but they wouldn't have a clue in, say, Birmingham.
