They do indeed. But most old books smell delicious too.

The first thing I do when I pick up a book is open it to the middle and smell it.

Is that weird?...

I've read a 1000 page fan-fiction version of the last Harry Potter on my laptop overnight once (I knew it wasn't the real one after half a page, but it was strangely good). I think there might be a correlation between that incident and my suddenly needing glasses. :-(

Hah. You'd be surprised how many live by the "reading from screen beats paying for the book" rule.

They must all be killed.

I hate it when I buy a book online and it arrives and is scuffed, bent or torn - I send things back to Amazon all the time because of that.

I'll spend ages looking for the 'best' copy of a book on a shelf in a shop too. I am a fussy moo though.

Oh yeah definitely. I agree with all that.

But after it's mine, I don't mind if the corners get a little bit bent, or I write inside them.
If someone else did that to my book, I'd kill them!

Me too. And magazines. I go through the whole pile, trying to work out which is the least scuffed/bent/damaged/torn...

My old boss lent me a copy of a novel she had borrowed from someone else. I read it and was going to take it back on the Monday when I discovered my toddler son had drawn all over the back page.

I ran to Borders, bought a new copy and spent the weekend bending the spine and artificially aging it with teabags. I don't think she twigged.

That's insane.

I used to love the Science books at school where people had made notes...and then every so often you'd find a clue saying "turn to page 54". So you did, and when you got there it said "turn to page 32" and it carried on like that until it said "turn to page 99" and there was a big picture of a dick with an arrow saying "that's you". Fun school times!

No way, you have to do that, it's in the rules!
With old books it depends how old they are and where they've been I reckon. Some smell like mould or moth balls.

I got a box of my old books down from the loft yesterday. They smelled yummy. Sort of sweet and vanilla-ish, like custard powder...?

Go and smell an old book now! You'll see what I mean.
Old books are the best for bringing childhood memories back.

You're all flipping mentals!
