I don't know if it's just because it's late, but a lot of things are confusing me on this forum at the moment.
Quote: Simon Stratton @ August 11 2008, 9:40 PM BSTCool - have you got anywhere with it?
IT Crowd DVD - Azza.

Ahhh, sorry. Thought that was to Finck.
Unfortunately, nothing much to report at present. It's all extremely interesting though!
Quote: Finck @ August 11 2008, 9:14 PM BSTThanks!
If the indefinite article is stressed, can I do the following:
*a* anti-depressant?
Somehow the sentence doesn't scan well if I put 'an'.
Anyone?
What's the whole sentence?
But I agree - you can put the emphasis on 'a', but not 'an' when spoken.
"This is a anti-authoritarian household."
"This is an anti-authoritarian household."
Always the 2nd one - unless you type it: "This is *a* anti-authoritarian household." To indicate over-emphasis on the indefinite article.
Why can 'an' not be emphasised?

Because you emphasise "a" by pronouncing it differently, which you can't do with "an". (The same with "the". You can say "Finck is theeeee most glamourous person I know.", although normally "the" with an eee-sound is used only before vowels.)
If you search for "indefinite article emphasis" on Google, you get Giles Coren's hate mail on the second page. What *a* PR genius!
I have now read Wikipedia and feel much more enlightened.
But I reckon we must be pronouncing things differently, because I'm still not sure about the a vs. an emphasis thing. Nevermind.

Argh! That's where I need the help. It sounds like shit, although it's grammatically correct.
*wanders off to wikipedia*
