Bad day? Page 74

Who was that guy, Ron Atkinson?
What a f**king c**t.

I don't want to watch it. This is why I don't like football. Even the possibility of seeing stuff like that depresses the f**k out of me.

Yeah, as said, not ALL football is like that.

Of the many matches I've been too I'm yet to witness anything other than banter from the crowd. And that's across the UK.

Idiotic fans are certainly in the minority.

Someone who did MORE for black players in the UK than anyone else though.

To my mind, he didn't use the word in a racist context to reflect HIS thoughts on black players.

Ron Atkinson apparently pioneered the introduction of black players into the game. *shrugs*

We keep saying the same points. How ace!

Still a c**t.

Maybe he needed more black people around so he could use the word nigger more often. He does seem to like it an awful lot.

Of course. But I thought we were talking about racism on the terraces?

I thought we were talking about racism within the sport in general...

What did he actually do? Just use an un-PC term, IIRC?

I don't think racism is rife in football, really. Although there aren't many black managers, of course.

I don't know how to argue with you on that. He might be, I've never met him. He is the product of a bye-gone era however.

Well be fair, it is a funny sounding word.

I guess it's still a working class game, in the way that rugby and cricket are avowedly middle class and polo is upper class.

That be true of England and may be Scotland but in Wales it is not. Just look at the preponderance of rugby clubs in the valleys. There are 3 within a stones throw of where I'm sitting. Not much of a middle class here. Still no violence on the terraces though.

Well, no, he DID say something totally wrong:

"He's what they call a lazy black n-er"

But it's the use of the word 'they' that, to my mind, suggests it's not a clear cut 'Racist Ron' type thing.

To be fair, I don't exactly know the guy's entire history! I don't want to.

But I've heard the audio of him speaking when he thought no one could hear him, used the n word an astounding amount. You just don't do that, I don't care how old you are.

Hardly.

A lot of his ex-players - black players - speak highly of him. And still do.

I wonder if the fact that it's labelled as something where racism is to be expected does actually make it more racist. Because zooo wouldn't go due to it, but average racist guy probably thinks he finds a rare refuge there.

Self-fulfilling prophecy.

(That could also be an explanation for the impression that clubs are being literally hijacked by racists or hooligans.)

Well, that's nice. But it doesn't affect how I think of him.
I'm sure 'lots of his friends are black'.

Anyway, let's agree to disagree. :)
