Sherlock Holmes

Just thought I'd start a thread on Sherlock Holmes. Who's a fan? I've read all the books and love watching the films/TV episodes. My favourite Holmes story is probably 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' but also love 'The Read Headed League' I also love Holmes in other media. My top three Holmes actors are:
1. Basil Rathbone
2. Peter Cushing
3. Jeremy Brett

Anyway, to link it in to you sitcom fans, I'd recommend the Peter Cushing episode 'The Blue Carbuncle' as it features James Beck (Walker from Dad's Army) and Michael Robbins (Arthur from On The Buses).

Back in 2006, I visited the Sherlock Holmes museum at 221B Baker Street and purchased a Deer Stalker. Would also love to purchase a Sherlock Holmes style pipe, but due to being a non-smoker if I bought it I know I wouldn't be able to resist smoking it, so don't want to fall into that trap.

Anyway, feel free to tell me what you think of Holmes and would love a good lively discussion on the brilliant Baker Street Detective.

I love The Hound of the Baskervilles. :) And pretty much any television / film adaptation of it - no matter how rubbish. It's still a really exciting story!

I also really like The Valley of Fear; the ending really surprised me. A Study in Scarlet is quite good, but I wasn't keen on The Sign of Four.

I've not been to the museum but I'd like to go. I went to the Baker Street set at Granada Studios Tour dozens of times but that's not quite the same...

When I was little I also really like the Disney film Basil the Great Mouse Detective - which was based on Holmes...but err, with a mouse(!) :$ I think that may have inspired me to seek out the real thing!

A man with no cocionse apparently.

Great fun stuff.

Blimey. That was quite a long way away from the real one! Would this scene have been filmed there?

Yup! Granada Studios Tour was amazing but it's shut down now :(

My Uncle worked for Granada studios, but sadly left before I was a Holmes fan, would have seen the set for nothing no doubt.

Love Sherlock Holmes, but this is funny...

I see Guy Ritchie is working on a new 'riskier' film version . . .

And there's a comedy version coming with Sacha Baron Cohen as Holmes and Will Ferrell as Watson.

Cool, thanks!

I daresay it would only have been of real interest had one watched ITV.

I think they still do corporate dos. Maybe you could have a Manchester meet-up there! :)

Haha! According to Wikipedia, most of it is now offices and other studios, with lots of the sets having been dismantled. But we do indeed intend to hold meets in other corners of this beautiful country. :)

Are you gonna come to the September one? Please say yes!
