I was going to say that, but Wikipedia says it's an English idiom as well. Apparently it indicates mock humility, which in turn must be subtly mocking the perceived arrogance of the French.

Why's it a bad thing anyway? :/
Well, apart from the French bit, obviously.
Quote: Paul W @ July 29 2008, 1:28 PM BSTIf I knew what a French plait was I'd agree.
You could have done what I did, and Google it. Pillock!

Quote: Scatterbrained Floozy @ July 29 2008, 2:06 PM BSTIt wasn't! We phoned up and it's all fine. Came overnight from Scotland.
That's some back-pressure build-up!

Yeah, but if he's filling up numerous cups then one of two things will happen.
He will either drink them all at once and die of water poisoning, or drink them at a reasonably rate by which time they will have cooled and thus rendered the entire exercise pointless.
In summary, Simon's acquaintance is a bit of a dick.

And the rest of us whose curiosity was piqued.
I came across PhQnix on facebook the other day!
I say that as if it was by accident, but I typed his name in, obviously.

I woke up with a ringing in my left ear today. I also can't hear high pitched noises properly in the left ear. My doctor has told me it's hayfever.
