I don't think there is a logical reasoning behind it. There is often a confusion in the media as to which name to use, I think...

I think we have many people named Joshua and Pang is just a better name.

I lived with a Chinese guy in my first year at uni - and in China apparently they do call each other by their surname. Not in a public school or army type way, it's just the norm.
