Oh yes, my friend, oh yes! We will all be examined!

Phew!
Quote: Frankie Rage @ July 31 2008, 2:19 PM BSTDamn fair point re MTW John! Nice one!
My pleasure, Frankie. MTW really does go underneath the bottom of the barrel, though, does it not!
Quote: Griff @ July 31 2008, 2:27 PM BSTI just checked the OED. Both are acceptable, but without the apostrophe is preferable.
It's not the OED which moderates this board so angrily though.
Most people who think we can send surplus population to other planets haven't thought it through. World population rises by at least 93,000,000 per year, so just to stay constant you would have to transport 93,000,000 people away from earth each year. For a reasonable ramp-down of world population, sending another 93 million away per year would be a great idea.
This I suspect is far greater than the number of people carried around by airlines each year. So it would be an incredible effort and gawd knows what it would do to the atmosphere/pollution on poor old Earth.
Quote: Griff @ July 31 2008, 2:38 PM BSTTo be fair, Bill, it's a largely unsolved problem which the finest minds in human history haven't managed to "think through" successfully. I don't think anyone's claiming to have solved the future of mankind here.
Mayhap, but I suspect an awful lot of politicians etc think "Oh well we can always export the surplus population when it gets to be a REAL problemo!"

When other planets are colonised they would select the finest minds to go, i.e., Me. Oh, and maybe Ellie and Rachel. Not great minds, granted, but they have other attributes needed to help build an exciting new society in space.

U.S. airlines alone carried 745.7 million passengers in 2005. But the cost of launching objects into even low-Earth-orbit is still in the thousands of dollars per pound and manned flight is many times more expensive.

MTW seems to be quite well liked by a few BSG types, John.
Not me though. It's not just the 'players' on the show that make me cringe, but the format as well. If only I could spell dros, I'd call it that!

I'm willing to stay on Earth if the rest of you are going btw! That's an incentive for many, I'd guess! I am not too worried about company as long as I can keep my collection of 'Spick & Span' and also 'Spick' and 'Span' vols 1 - 139. Ta!
I am sure science can find a way to ship folk at lower cost, they just need to get on with it.

Quote: Frankie Rage @ July 31 2008, 10:03 AM BSTHaving just fought my way through 'pleb time' (rush hour) at Clapham Junction, I feel we need to either,
1. Start reducing in number (yes I know, I'll go first..)
2. Find some more planets to pollute, i.e. massively increase global investment in space travel and start collonising, even if it is 50 zillion light years to the next habitable planet..
As I don't see there ever being enough 'despots' to achieve 1. in an organised and acceptable way to those 'plebs' who 'care', I'm in favour of 2. on the basis that as we have started to destroy the universe, we may as well Magnus the rest of it.
What do you think?

I think you need to stop watching Logan's run.
Logan's Run's great. Very racy, and you get to see Jenny Augutter completely naked. Again.
Glam: I don't have much interest in Logan's Run as a solution. I just think there are too many humans on this planet and just about every habitable square inch is owned by some twat with his 'No Trespassing' signs.
As for Jenny Agutter naked, Chip.. well.. *throat goes dry*
She's like 90.
