Years ago, my mum had a colleague at the DHSS who was interviewing a lady about her son for child benefits and she asked his name. The lady replied 'Gooey'. She asked her to repeat it and eventually had to get her to write it down. She wrote: "Guy".
If you'd only seen it written down and thought it was pronounced like that, why on earth would you pick it!>_<
