Haha, yeah I was the same as you then. I couldn't be bothered with lessons (I thought "If Jimi Hendrix can be self-taught, so can I") which probably didn't help. I don't know anything about scales or keys. I like playing chords, chords are good. Chords are my friends

I was told not to take lessons by my friend who insisted that I "should find my own way to make music, man." It's a lot easier to talk nonsense like that when you can play.
