Kaos have just launched a full length screenplay competition:
I've entered the short competition for 3 years now. First 2 years I got through to the second round. Just waiting for the nail biting announcements for this year's first round. This is the only competition I pay to enter and it's worth it because you can monitor progress by seeing how far you get. The prize for winning is getting your film made, every writers dream.
Are any of the winning films from previous years well-known?

You have pay an entry fee for the kaos one £65. No thanks from me.
I don't mind the fee, it's just the low budget for the film worries me.
I don't think you should ever pay for your own work. These people make their money that way and may not be as serious as you think.

a) You don't pay to get your film made, you pay to enter - if it gets made you get paid.
b) They've got a pretty fierce line-up of judges and it seems to have a good reputation.
Also, JJCocker you say you can monitor your progress.
How does that work?
[I have a short screenplay in with them.]
Plus (!) technical question...how do you quote just part of someones post?

I never said I thought you had to pay to get it made. I know its for entry and my point is the same. I don't think its worth it. Do you get anything back for your £65 apart from the one-off chance of winning? If your script is good enough to win a comp like this then its likely to be good enough to be made with someone who has a bigger budget and rep.

Point taken, but since when has a script being good enough meant that'll it get made? To me, the publicity and contacts associated with winning (and running up BTW) would be the real prize. It's a punt I'm willing to take.
Having said that, £65 is a bit steep - more than the short screenplay comp - and the low budget would obviously have greater impact on a full length screenplay, as opposed to a 15 minute short.
I'll need to think about it.
Still think it's worth it for the shorts, though, as there's not a great deal of outlet for these.

I see loads of Shorts competitions advertised on Talent Circle, then there are a lot of festivals. I don't mind paying to get into a festival with a completed film/short but yeah, £65 does seem quite a lot. Good luck with it anyway. Its up to you at the end of the day.

Short Films don't seem to get much publicity... No money in it, which makes the prize of someone making the film all the better. How many producers read unsolicited scripts from unknowns? However, if you've had your work produced, then you have an advantage, and maybe an agent!

I would say the same for most other competitions, but this competition has an excellent reputation, a good judging line up and a prize worth winning.
Quote: ContainsNuts @ July 19 2008, 12:40 PM BSTI don't think you should ever pay for your own work.
You're absolutely right, but if you can think of a better way to get your foot in the door of a production company then I'd be interested to know.

In this case I believe they are serious in finding new talent and they have stated in the past, on the short film competition, that the entry fee is considered a readers fee. It takes money to organise a competition on this scale.

Did you enter the Short Screenplay Competition, Lazzard? If so then the first round results will be posted up on the website by the end of the month, I hope! The nail biting goes on for about 4 rounds, I think, and then the winners are announced.
You're lucky if you get an acknowledgement, let alone a rejection letter, with some production companies, and you never know how well, or bad, you've done. This way you can see for yourself and how many other scripts were chasing the prize. You're either in it, or you're not.

Cut and paste, sweetie; cut and paste! Just make sure you leave the quote marks at the beginning and end.
Cheers
