Graham Linehan interview... Page 3

You know what, I've just started to realise something... we're all too middle class on this message board. Well, I am anyway. Graham Linehan is too. Yes, BBC3 is a bit of a shit channel (Pulling excluded which is just too brilliant), but that's only because the shows on BBC Three aren't aimed at us. 'Terrible' shows like The Wall actually are no doubt quite popular with the demographics they're aimed at.

It's a bit like Radio 3 - I've got no intention of ever listening to it, but it has to exist because the BBC need to ensure they're providing something for everyone (as stipulated by the licence fee). So whilst we might not enjoy the comedy on BBC3, its important it does exist as people out there (my inner snob adds: 'in council estates') are no doubt laughing at these comedies?!? (how else do you explain so many series of Tittybangbang?)

So what I'm getting at is, we can't complain about BBC Three as it is actually starting to do its job now by excluding us middle class moaners!

You're a wise old fox Mr Mark. Well struck, sir!

But even I in my cynical old ways expect and hope that there are BBC3 comedy fans on this site. Aren't there?

I wouldn't've thought so - they're probably playing computer games, underage drinking, smoking, or discovering the fun things boys and girls can do together. I think Mark's prbly right...

Bring back the BBC Choice mentality, that's what I say (but probably with a slightly bigger budget).

As long as BBC 3 continue to show Family Guy I'm happy. I cried with laughter last night over this bit

I wonder how many of BBC3's target demographic actually pay anything towards the Beeb. It's become CBeebies with a health warning.

Did anyone see the report published over the weekend recommending that the BBC should be cut back to one mainstream TV station, a speech radio service and a news department! That's been dismissed out of hand, however over the past few years there have been numerous calls for BBC 3 to be scrapped.

I think BBC3 should become a test bed for a wide variety of programmes, nurturing new talent in all fields (comedy, drama, documentaries etc) not just programme's aimed at a particular demographic. All shows should have a life-span of 2 series max, if it's good enough it should be moved to mainstream BBC or ‘sold' to C4, Channel5, Sky etc.

I have more of a problem with the shock-docs they show & the dodgy reality shows, which seem to be competing for the same audience already catered for elsewhere. (I suppose those type of shows are cheap and may be made by new talent but the content could still be something more substantial.

I really think that if BBC3 continues on the path it's presently on it will eventually be removed.

Agree wholeheartedly.

I think BBC3 is already a test bed for new comedy, but does anyone else find it a bit discouraging knowing that that channel is the likely location for your first script? I imagine a lot of BBC1 and 2 viewers would dismiss it straight away - without even watching it - simply because it's on BBC3.

I would tear your hand off in the rush to sign the contract. Any platform for a writer is better than none. :)

I agree totally. And also I might get to meet Karen Taylor - to discuss comedy of course.

Absolutely, and so would everyone else. Channel snobbery would go directly out of the window if a BBC3 commissioner was waving a contract and a fat cheque under ANY writer's nose.

I wouldn't even worry about the fat cheque.

Unless I had a say in the direction, editing, and casting I'd hang on to my script.

Yikes - it's what we'd all love eventually but it ain't gonna happen. We aren't the ones holding a gun in this hostage scenario. ;) :P

Prepare to hang onto that script for a long time.
