Why are studio sitcoms wanted? Page 3

For really funny sitcoms, live studio audiences can be good. But I find that when a show is only mildly funny, the audience hooting with laughter (is that for real, or do they hold up a card saying "Laugh Now"?) just sort of underlines how unfunny the joke was.
Did that make sense or was I just rambling?

No, it's for real. You must remember that studios provide alcohol - sometimes free - to the audience before they go in and take their seats.

And then you are stuck there for hours, bursting for a pee and waiting for the horror to end.

Aaaaah. So that's it.
When I watch After You've Gone (for example) and one of the characters says something kind of funny, it makes me chuckle but the audiance go crazy and it makes it look a bit silly to me.

Also remember that volumes on the microphones which record the audience's laughter can be turned up.

Hem.

There also used to be a thing where they'd 'slide' the laugh ie move it, but could still count it as 'live'.
Not sure if that's still legal in the squeaky clean world of TV

If I were you I would hide. Because you can be sure a sharp lecture is being aimed in your direction! Laughing out loud
