Net Neutrality

What's the latest with this?

For those who don't know, this explains the concept quite neatly:

Worse case scenario - eventual death of the internet. No more BSG, no more porn (i'm aware some of the members here look at it). So what's the latest? Aaron, Mark - any views (on net neutrality, not the online habits of BSGers) ?

But this is about ideas in America, and they don't own the net.
Aaron should fully support this though, being a proud Capitalist an all that.

You know how the Daily Mail is so religiously vilified for "scaremongering" about foreigners and crime and whatnot? Well, this is the left/liberal equivalent. Talking up a stupid, small issue and making a big deal out of it. Notice the lack of information in that video about what effect this would actually have? In 4 minutes, it just repeated that "it won't be equal" in about a dozen ways. There was one passing mention to everyone else being "stuck in the slow lane" (which is bollocks, btw) and nothing else. Boring anti-capitalist claptrap.

I should point out, however, that I don't agree with the idea of it, but it won't have the effect they're making out, if it does go full-steam ahead.

Anyway, as long as the US Government continues to refuse to hand over the root servers to ICANN, the net will never be neutral.

I've said for a long time though that I think this will considered by many the golden age of the internet.
It's so damned easy to 'acquire' free stuff and share files etc, but I think it'll get harder and harder as the net becomes more policed, or ISPs start getting really invasive.

Yes, unfortunately you're probably correct there.

Yes, it's true, we don't know how lucky with are with the internet at the moment, it was even easier to f**k with it 20 years ago, I believe the pentagon literally had one password screen to get past and boom you could access all the secret files you wanted.

BT have been under investigation recently for sending there users spyware to gather data on them - which is no doubt only going to get worse... in some way shape or form.

It's a shame but a lot of f**ked up stuff does get on the internet.

I agree, but you can easily avoid that shit if you want to.
I think I'd rather keep avoiding it and keep my freedom and the 'openness' of the net.

True, the idea I was going it is, if you close the door for those f**ked up people they'll stop doing it.

It'd be great if they could do it without treading on everyone else's toes. The one good thing is at least it makes it easier to track 'real' sickos down and arrest them. If they weren't shouting their mouths of on the net a lot of them would go uncaught.

This discussion seems to be going really off course now. :S

I'm confused.

I see what you mean, Aaron.

Frankly, the porn industry would have a lot of power over the internet in ways of "Fast tracking" sites.

So we're talking about porn now?

Porn has done wonders for the web.

ALL HAIL PORN.
