Why aren't men allowed to be romantic any more - like in the movies. Humphf. I got told of for taking my girlfriend for a meal where we went on our first date, and then back to the house for rose petals on the bed, chocolate fondue and strawberries, and then a trip up a glass bottomed lift up the spinnaker tower last valentine's day. Haven't heard the end of it since. And last week got reprimanded for opening a door for her. Sigh.

Your girlfriend didn't reprimand you herself did she? That would be bad.
'Why do you want me to go through the door first?' Um, I don't, it's just the done thing. Bless 'er. Fair enough though, I don't think men are supposed to be romantic nowadays and when they are it's looked on suspiciously.

I think ideally everyone should be polite and open doors for one another.
But I quite like it when boys do it.
Opening doors for women is more 'gentlemanly' than romantic for me. I supppose it depends on the context. But I do generally agree. I'm a romantic (somewhere behind the facade) and I'm single, so maybe there is something to it.
Or maybe I'm just pig ugly
I don't think romance is dead, I just think it's more a matter of doing something original and clearly selfless, perhaps spontaneously, than merely copying some of the cheese that's been done a billion times before.

Seriously though? If a bloke does it that's a good thing? I love the old fashoned way, but find I get a 'you're trying too hard' if I do it. But if i say 'we're all equal now, you have to open the door for me' girls like it.

Simon, regardless of what your girlfriend said, ALL women like to be given chocolates, flowers and romantic meals. The trick is to do it sparingly - say once a month - and the rest of the time completely ignore them.
I'm joking of course!
Once every two months will suffice.
So come on, I'm waiting to hear, what's her reasoning to all of this?

Seriously though mate, there's nothing that'll drive most women away than being overly-romantic all the time. They say they want hearts and flowers and romance but if you're the perfect man all the time, they'll get bored and move on to a guy who's more of a challenge. That's why a lot of women are attracted to arseholes.

Haha, there's some truth in that. I used to get flowers through the post a lot which was really sweet at first, but then after a while it was a bit weird and needy and boring.
Ungrateful git, I know, I know.
A lot of girls seem to secretly want men who DON'T treat them like they're something special. It's like that old Groucho Marx saying: "I don't want to be part of any club that would have me as a member". Some girls don't like blokes to make too much of an effort, because they think it makes them seem like desperate losers.
Or like they're apologising for something!
