Because it's an indicator to their personality. People who use that kind of metaphor invariably consider themselves to be winners and everyone else to be losers. It's a big hint that they are probably worth avoiding. It is, after all, perfectly possible to be successful without being a c**t about it.

To look at a person and classify them in terms of "winners" and "losers" is a pretty hideous way to carry on. Someone sells a sitcom script ? They're a winner! But wait, they have no friends. They're a loser! But they have a pretty girlfriend. They're a winner again! But they have a drink problem. Oh wait, they're a loser now. And so on it goes. Shit, I can't keep track. Is this person a winner or a loser ? It's so difficult. Probably best if I just assume they are a "loser". After all there's bound to be some criteria I can judge them on which qualifies them as a loser and me as a winner. Hooray!

Well, you can consider yourself a 'winner' however you want. Surely you should judge 'winning' at your own criteria?

And of course you can be successful without being a total tit, but success is essentially winning. There doesn't have to be one winner, there can be lots of winners. Winning is being successful.

I was talking in general terms, replying to Seefacts's question about why I dislike people who talk about themselves and others in terms of "winners" and "losers".

But yes I do choose my friends very carefully, and boastful, arrogant types are not on the list. If that's a hangup, it's served me very well.

I haven't done that though, have I?

I don't know anyone on here in person, and can't truly judge anything or anyone. No one can. You might THINK you can, but really you can't.

All I can judge is quality and standard of stuff in Critique.

You see, you haven't understood a thing I've said. Winners aren't evil people. People who go on and on about being winners are, well, not evil, just obnoxious.

Though, no one HAS gone on about winning on here. What is winning? As you say, one person's winner could be another person's loser!

And surely the only people who don't like winners, are losers? Because if they were winners, they wouldn't care?

It's like how the only people who bang on about money are the people who don't have any.

Quote: Griff @ July 5 2008, 6:35 PM BST

Blimey. Have you ever met any City traders ?

No, I don't live in a city! No Cathedral sadly.

This thread has gone mental!! Shall we stop banging on about winners and losers and empathy and city traders and Griff's tea eating habits?

I'm ending on the following:

I have NEVER said any work on here was 'shit'. I've never derided people's work for no reason. I've merely passed on the comments of others.

I HAVE said 'Needs more jokes' and 'Not funny enough' in Crit. That is constructive, in my view. Some agree, some don't.

I have NEVER claimed to be a winner (or a loser) in a any respect. I have merely posted my experiences, as that is the whole point of a writer's discussion board. Christ, given that I don't write full time (or even PART time) how the f**k can I be a winner?!

I also don't think I've ever boasted, I certainly hope not anyway. Some will probably disagree, which is no biggy. But in life there are time when people will have more success than others, yet talking about it seems to be considered 'bragging'. Fair enough. I'm going to stop mentioning any experiences I have, obviously it's massively offensive.

I was going to do a bit about sketches and how my sketch scripts got changed and in what way, just to give an insight into next months Lab, but I can't bothered now.

Can i just say i've won loads and some of my bonuses would make a city trader look like an Asda shelf stacker.

Can you lend my a fiver?

Call me Mr Winner from now on and i'll give you it!

Call me Mr Winner

Calm down dear.

As somebody who is essentially new to this forum, this thread has been great in illustrating who's who, and particularly who is a bit of a tosser.

I'll let you work out who it is.

Edit: Most of you seem quite nice, by the way.

I think we know what category I'm in, don't we lady and gents?

Who used that metaphor? I spoke about losing in a schools sports day...that wasn't a metaphor, i was last.

You seem to have a hang up about the issue and have elevated the terms to encompass so much of your life that you let it dictate who your friends should be. Were you beaten by a winner as a baby? Choke on a gold medal once?

Pete try and tone down the personal stuff. It's not big, it's not clever... and it certainly isn't funny.

Agree, it's on a par with the sarcasm that it responded to. (although funny is subjective, it made me laugh)

Answer the question about empathy then Pete. Which was a serious one, and I'll know perhaps a little more of you as a writer. Spits and spats are all very well but I actually am interested in what the f**k people actually think about the craft, the struggle, the whole joyful bollocks of it all, and if that makes me a hugger then f**k it, give me a hug or tell me to f**k off. Art isn't wanky it's human. And if it ain't, what is it?

I'd love a proper chinwag about writing. Especially given how, your Marc, know your beans. A new thread?

I A new thread?

Certainly time to close this one. If there is a passing mod out there, a padlock it would be no bad thing.

But no before someone laughs at my Michael Winner joke.

Ha, no I liked it! Didn't see it coming.

Hell yeah, and I know I made a remark re credits Seefacts which was ill judged and totally against my normal stance, but the trouble with internet comments is that that the cold starkness sometimes doesn't betray the thought behind it and I thought you were being a bit mean about the guy whose script got slagged after he thought, after a pro review, that it was better than the production company responded with. And I am a hundred percent serious when I say that the more my empathy levels rise the better a writer I will be. It is almost tautological. The odds are so stacked against anybody writing in TV nowadays that we Band of Brothers and Sisters should at least stick together if we can. I'll provide the White Lightning and bandages.
