And it's veyr rare to find work here, that doesn't have some spark of potential

What i find interesting is whether a spark is enough. I am of the opinion that natural talent is obvious. This is not to say that development and learning can't multiply it many times...but the raw ability is there from the outset. David Beckham at 7 doing keepy uppy's for hours on end, Lewis Hamilton at 12 racing radio controlled cars on Blue Peter, Charlotte Church on Johnathon Ross when she was 9. These aren't sparks...these are glowing fires of possibility.

Yes but it's rare for me to read a script in critique that's all bad.

Then that's where we differ. Life has a million opportunities for all of us - if you're banging on the wrong door you are better of knowing it so you can look elsewhere.

You sound like a self-help book. Yes, don't turn your back on opportunities while waiting for something that is never going to happen, but sometimes life is a crock of shit and you just need something to cling on to.

And frankly, if you want to build a career in comedy you are banging on the wrong door in any case, as are we all. Spending all your salary on lottery tickets would probably be more productive.

Some of us are just doing this because, as sootyj says, we love it.

People need more confidence in their own opinion.

When it comes to my own work, I have.

a) I have made my money elsewhere, i have no need for a "caree"

b) what a load of negative twaddle...despite my lack of "need" i still aim to make money from this anyway. I'll just use it for faster cars and toys for the kids.

I am infact J K Rowling and have made a fortune writing whimsical, poorly edited drivel about wizards.

I'm writing comedy, as a break from counting my money, and liberating the opressed.

My dinner is actually ready now. It's roast gammon with mashed potatoes. Yum.

And I'm going to watch Battlestar Galactica with it. Oh yes, it's the high life for me.

I do like a bit of gammo.

I might book a table with you next time, Griff.

You can spit in it, if you like.

Of course there are basics and rules. That's why there are bad scripts and good scripts in this world.

That's like saying there are laws, that is why there is right and wrong in the world.

Hang on - you can find a spark in the most appalling drivel in Critique but not in one of the most popular writers of all time ??? (i'd have thought your hair would be stood on end)

Popular doesn't automatically mean good, I'm of the opinion that Rowling just got very lucky; her books are no better than many other childrens fantasy novels, hers just caught on.

Agreed.

In fact there are many vastly superior children's fantasy novelists.

Oh great you're all crapping on my writing.

I'll shelve my plans to give every poster a million squids, and instead curse you all with herpes.

Not everyone who posts on critique has the same objectives. Some people like to write as a fun pastime, but they like feedback on how they can improve what they have done. It can come across sometimes that some posters judge everyone against their own objectives.
