Sitcom popularity Page 2

I used to watch both My Family and Two Pints when they started, but havent watched either for some time now. I think My Family was OK to start with, but after the son left I lost interest; it went downhill for me and any additions, that dopey looking blonde woman and the fat, obviously gay bloke who fancies her, were terrible. I havent liked it any time Ive caught it in the last couple of years. With Two Pints I think I just got bored of it; it used to make me laugh a bit, but evidently not enough to make sure I carried on with it.

So Ive just gone off both over time after initially finding both watchable, but they obviously appeal to a wide audience and so theyre doing the job thatt theyre there for; theyre hitting their targets.

Yes, I've never found those two characters funny either. Better to stick to the parents and the three kids, I think.
It never makes me laugh out loud properly, but it's pleasant to watch sometimes.
I dunno, it doesn't offend me that it exists, you know?

But Friends is the ultimate in that - 'comedy chocolate pie'. But it still managed to be sharp and funny and not resort to cheap gags. It can be done! Given how loved Friends is over here, you'd have thought they'd have tried to make an 8.30 British-style version.

And although I generally don't agree with the comparisons, we have more or less had that in Coupling (as far as setting and style goes at least). In any case, I disagree with that view of Friends. It has plenty of cheap gags, and unlike Two Pints or My Family, I personally find it needs a particular state of mind to watch. It's not something I can just sit down to.

But look at previous shows in that style - like Fools and Horses. Surely the ultimate in mainstream, well loved sitcom? But at the same time it was warm, clever, witty, silly - and much, much better than MF.

My Family can be clever. It can also be silly, and witty. And as for "better", you're confusing your own opinion with fact.

And things that do the job are all well and good, but I certainly wouldn't swap my 'gillette m3 power' for a disposable Bic razor.

You want to get yourself a Wilkinson Sword Quattro Titanium, mate. Trust me.

A voice of reason. :)

Yeah, definitely. That's another take on the thing about it not taking effort to watch. It's not the kind of thing I'd sit and properly laugh out loud at, but it's entertaining, and as long as there's not much of that Welsh twat, an entirely watchable show - for my sense of humour.

Ultimately, sitcoms will suffer increasingly from criticism because the human experience doesn't change very much, and takes longer to do so. A lot of the ideas and plot devices in shows like My Family can be seen in the likes of Steptoe and Son, Bless This House, and any number of other family-based comedies. That's not because the writers are lazy and reusing ideas, but because there are a limited number of scenarios which are going to have familiarity to a large enough section of the audience.

I think Two Pints is top. Always funny, a decent mix of humour, well defined characters and well plotted. I haven't seen that much of My Family, but what I have seen I really enjoyed. It's not Friends, but it was never meant to be. Some people waffle on about American sitcoms. Yeah some are good. But some are dire. Have you ever seen Everybody Loves Raymond...

Yeah, it's great!
:D Much better than My Family or Two Pints I think.

really? I'll have to give it another go. I have two seasons of it but when I started to watch it the other night I couldn't get to the end of episode 1. I was quite drunk at the time though. And was pretty comedied out as well. I'd done two gigs in North Yorks and then Liverpool, listened to the entire League of Gents On The Town, in the car on the way there and back.

Definitely worth giving it a fair chance! It's very similar to The King of Queens (and in fact the two have crossed over), if you know that one?

God, King of Queen is WAY better than Raymond.

Raymond, in my view, is hateful shit. Awful.

Queens is really likeable - thanks to the brilliant Kevin James who can deliver a line with the best of them. And it's a nice twist to have the woman be horrible and unfair, and the man be put upon.

And Jerry Stiller is good too.

I don't like King of Queens, but I quite like Raymond.

I will say that Queens can very from okay, to brilliant so it's not as consistent as it could be, but I'll always watch when it's on.

Another example of a mainstream show that's witty and clever.

I'll agree that it's better. But they're very similar in style.

Why is Raymond 'hateful' though?

I like My Family (the programme - not my 'actual' family), but I don't watch it every week... just when I'm not busy doing someting else. It's something you can easily dip in and out of.

I've never really found Two Pints very funny, but I can understand why others like it.

Everybody Loves Raymond is probably my favourite American sitcom. I loved Peter Boyle (God rest his soul).

I have watched both shows, but I turn on to watch neither.

Are we crediting the BBC with having made a conscious decision based upon quality prime time viewing? Surely these decisions are financially led.

Option 1 - Commission new sitcom/writer - Highly expensive
Option 2 - Commission next series of established sitcom with the right demographic for the slot that needs to be filled - moderately expensive.
Option 3 - Repeat old sitcoms - Cheapest.

Whilst I would be the first person to scream for new material rather than another series of the two shows being discussed, I have to be moderately pleased that at least the Beeb are still spending money on comedy, regardless whether it is my brand of comedy or not.

If I want to watch repeats of great comedy I'll watch UKTV Gold or Dave.

I think that ALL writers should remain optimistic, after all, it would seem that you only need to break through once and the Beeb will never bother to look anywhere else. How else can we explain Green Green Grass
>_<

To me both Two Pints and My Family are both extraordinarily average shows. They're the lazy work of hacks, with little or no creative spark. You can have intelligent and imaginative mainstream comedy, and we used to be able to do it in this country with shows like Only Fools, One Foot In The Grave and Blackadder.

However, about ten or fifteen years ago that tradition came to a juddering halt and mainstream became lamestream. And if the BBC was so happy with it's mainstream output, Michael Jacob wouldn't have a job. Since I believe the whole point of his position is to try and find writers who can recreate those glory days.

It is patently ridiculous to persuade a man who does not like rhubarb to eat some.

Also I do believe Mister J was exec producing 2 Pints. I am sure when he was asked about heading up the comedy college he didn't take your stance Mister Chipolata. At least I hope he didn't :)
