sounds interesting

The notice inviting entries tries so hard to be rib-tickling, and with so little success, that it gave me queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Perhaps I do not have "E4 style and attitude".

If you don't think you've got "E4 style and attitude" there will be a few more opportunities (relativley) soon.

E4 Radio will launch later this year; (primarily music but they're now obviously looking for 'youth based' comedy as well. Target audience 15-29).

Channel 4 Radio will launch early next year. ( Seen as a rival to BBC Radio 4, it will broadcast original debate, drama and comedy. Target audience 30-54)

The third service, Pure4, (a knowledgeable, accessible radio station for music lovers, home of the original radical artists from the worlds of music and culture.) will launch about a year after E4 Radio. I don't think this will broadcast much comedy.

All services will be on DAB.

I think the long term future of all these stations is debatable however if it gives writers another radio arena as well as the BEEB it must be a good thing.

That's interesting, thanks. The radio route seems to be picking up so I'll be hoping to do more of it.

Out of interest, has anyone had any of those doors opened off the back of Tilt?

Sounds interesting. We've entered. Didn't do anything new, we just gave them some links to some of our audio work. What's the point in writing something new when you don't know exactly what they want? Write what you want and enjoy because that's what you're best at. If they like it, then good. If not, sod it.

Got this press release today from Channel 4. I don't really understand it (what the hell is Year Dot?)... I'll post it here anyway though (it's not linked to the radio competition, I just don't think it warrents a new thread). It doesn't look like a comedy competition, but is something you might be able send a comedy video into by the looks of it. The prize is getting your video on the C4 website.

To celebrate the launch of Year Dot we are holding a competition where we want you to create a video around the theme 'the first year of the rest of my life.' Have you got a certain ambition you want to achieve this year? Or have you gone ahead and achieved it already? We want you to make a video and tell us about it.

Your video can take the form of anything – from animations, talking heads, caught on camera, spoof, to documentary style. Whether it is humorous, dark, edgy, silly or thought provoking, we want your entries. All you need to do is head to www.myspace.com/yeardot and find out how to enter.

Thanks for the info Griff, just read some of the small print......

Please note that by submitting an entry you assign to Channel 4 the copyright and all other rights in your entry for use in all media. You also agree that Channel 4 and E4 Radio may use, edit, adapt or translate your entry, and you agree not to exercise any 'moral rights' you may have in your entry.

Is this all standard stuff?

Thanks for posting this I hadn't read it and was going to send my stand up act which would then mean I couldn't officially perform it again - or that it could get performed by someone else. I'll be writing some new stuff then.

cheers

:)

I think that proviso only applies if you 'win'. So if you send in a recording of your act and it's not selected it doesn't mean Channel4 then own the copyright. Well that's the usual....

But what about this clause?:

They say that incase they may use a clip as part of a trailer or a show or something , or if you one day become famous they can dig it out and put it one of those 'before they were famous' shows. I think what it means is that they own the copyright of that particular recording - not the jokes, etc per se. To be honest it's highly likely it will ever be used, they just say that to cover themselves, bit like 'may contain traces of nuts'. I know the BBC have had a similar clause that only lasted as long as you were in the competiton, so you couldn't go and broadcast it somehwere else, though if you'd been eliminated you could then use it.

It's like a stand-up act on TV. For example Jimmy Carr does a spot on Live at the Apollo. The recording of which is copyrighted to the BBC. However his act and jokes still belong to him (or the writer who wrote them) and he can do them over and over whenever he likes.

Hmm. I understand what you're saying but that isn't what is written. It clearly states that they own the copyright "...Please note that by submitting an entry you assign to Channel 4 the copyright and all other rights...".

Yeah, that's the thing - it says 'the entry' nothing about after you win - thats usual that after you win they own rights on the recordings. I'm not being naive and saying that my stuff is that special, or that they would, or could even be arsed, but you need to be a bit careful about the small print.

that's my pennyworth

Okay, so how do we clarify this point?

"by submitting an entry you assign to Channel 4 the copyright and all other rights in your entry for use in all media. You also agree that Channel 4 and E4 Radio may use, edit, adapt or translate your entry, and you agree not to exercise any 'moral rights' you may have in your entry."

I've got 3 days before the deadline and I'd quite like to keep hold of my work if I don't win?!

Did anyone get confirmation after submitting an entry? I've heard nowt.

I was going to send some scenes from my sitcom but if I do does that mean channel 4 own the rights to them?

Thanks you've eased my consern.

I'd like to remind every body still worried of what somebody (I don't know who) said about if write something the only way you can keep it 100% protected is to never let anyone else see it.
