I know getting an agent for a first time writer is rare but I think I did it. They said they're very interested in working with me. They're initial retainer is £1,250 and I really want to go for it but as a uni student I dont have that sort of cash laying around. I thought agents worked on comission?
I have an agent... sort of
I think I know that agent, they also offer to get young teenage girls modelling contracts right?
Remember you are a writer waiting to be discovered not exploited. Best of luck.
Sorry, but this is a con. Don't waste your money. No genuine agent would ask for money up front.
Absolutely, I doubt you'll get an agent till you've made at least one successful pitch or sale.
Do not pay these people. it's a swindle.
I've got some magic beans you could buy if you're interested...?
DO NOT TOUCH THESE PEOPLE WITH A BARGEPOLE!
I wonder if we should have a thread on here naming and shaming rip-off agents/prod co's. I know it's not such a big problem here as it is in the States, but a pinned background check thread could be useful, especially if you are just starting out.
Zuhaib - a reputable agent would never ask for money up front. Don't forget, an agent works for YOU, not the other way round.
Avoid like the plague.
Just to add my voice to the sensible people on this thread. You never ever pay any agent upfront. They only earn money when you do.

Good point. Maybe Zuhaib should share their name with us.
Maybe he's a travel agent?
I can only reiterate what the others said above. It's a con.
I would advise you to read up on how to go about entering the industry. There are no shortcuts, so be wary.
I hope you didn't send them your work either as they'll be likly to pass it of as their own or sell it to someone to pass it off as their own.
I'm in accordance with everyone else. NO agent would ever ask for a fee upfront. I wouldn't worry about what work you may or may not have sent as they are clearly not in the business of stealing work let alone getting it legitimately produced.
And I wouldn't go with any thinking that makes someone feel "well it's better to go with someone than no-one". No it isn't. If the work's any good, you'll get 'found' by real agents.

I'll be your agent for £750.
