Writing for a commercial channel Page 2

I used Script Smart and pt.12 is the norm for that I think. Everything is double spaced and looks 'HUGE' on the page.

Def.

Is that BBC style where everything has big margins? Or US style Courier New font?

It's BBC style. Big margins, double spacing between lines of dialogue and in Ariel pt.12. I got this Script smart as a download from the BBC writers room.

Well 45-50 pages is what you should aim for then.

The 'Two Pint' example that was on the BBC's site for a while was 50 pages.

Didn't you have a meeting about one of your pilots this week, Seefacts? Was it with a commercial channel, perchance?

How did it go anyway. I thought we'd have had one of your informative posts on it by now.

I did funnily enough!

We're gearing my pilot to a commercial broadcaster, it's it's bloody hard!

I did consider posting about it, but I think people are sick of hearing from me!

Not all all, you are our informer on the inside.

Actually, there's nor much to tell.

It went very well though, and it's very encouraging as it might lead to some other stuff.

How vague that sounded.

Not everyone. I like to amass as much knowledge as I can, and you bring us tips from beyond the mountains which are pretty useful things to know.

So pour forth your experience....

Yes. I have learnt that wearing cords to a prod co meeting does you no harm.

No revelations . . . Though channels want more female lead shows, which doesn't help me one bit!

Everything that was said was 'me' specific really. The person was very complimentary about me and my work and was really keen to work with me, which is always flattering.

And, like my other meeting, they said most unsolicited stuff was shit. Again, no help to anyone!

Sorry, I've let you all down.

Or brown trousers and a nice shirt :D

And jumpers are good too.

My last script was approx 6600 words and this came in at 56 pages. I was told by a few people that this was much to high and should be closer to 40.

Def.

Wordcount is what's important Deferenz, about 6000 words is the norm. But it can vary slightly due to directions / dialogue. I've just read a script I'm editing and it came in at 62 pages.

What do producers wear?

If you are doing a cut job to get down to your desired page level, does changing font size count? By changing from pt.12 to pt.10 I can remove 8 pages.

It's odd questions, but someone has to ask them.

Def.

It's a question a lot of people ask but you have to remember that if somebody tells you your script is too long, they're not talking about the page count, they're talking about how long it would last on screen.

And if they are talking about the page count they're wrong.

I've been told scripts have been too long going by page count loads of times though.

Iron suits.

Iron suits.

You'd think they could afford non-iron suits.
