I'm not generally that keen on beardage.
But a cool mustache arrangement can be very sexy. (on very rare occasions, and on the right men). See Julian Barratt (as said in thread already!), Giles Coren, and a couple of others.

Men should only grow a beard/stubble if they can pull it off. If you have wispy hair then I wouldn't bother as you'll just look like a teenager trying to look older.
My facial hair grows quick and is thick, but I never go more than a couple of days without shaving as I just look scruffy otherwise.
I'm sure some people do like to hide behind their beards, but I doubt that is the reason in every case. With me it's mostly just a little laziness.
