We just did a sweepstake in our house for Euro 2008 (bit late, but nevermind).

I got Austria and Switzerland. So I'm winning precisely f**k all then.

Congratulations Laughing out loud

I was gutted. Two people got both Holland and France, and Spain and Italy. If we were giving out money for the shittest teams I'd be laughing.

You can guarantee two things. One will roll over and let the Germans walk over them and the others will refuse to score in case that makes them unpopular with absolutely anyone.

My advice is either a) live in a smaller flat with fewer people or b) kill the flatmate who has Holland

Are you old enough to remember the West Germany vs East Germany game from World Cup 74? talk about a stitch up!

Yes. I think so. Wasn't it to do with both sides needed a draw or something. (Memory not what it was and all that bumf)

Yep it was and of course it was the first time they had played each other competitively since the war.

I was 11 at the time and was just getting into football.

I was 16 and couldn't believe that Germany had got the World Cup two years after their shambolic Olympics!! Also it was the age of the Dutch and they really should have won it that year :(

Did you back him? 20/1 looks quite tasty now, even if he was 3 miles offside then!

No, I haven't done any bets so far.

Holland were great tonight, but knowing them, they'll be unlucky, later in the tournament, and get knocked out.

It was because of that they decided to play the final games in a group at the same time. Poor Austria - again!

So my boys are doing well. And I reckon that tall midfielder (forgotten his name) would be a good buy for someone.

False memory syndrome? Didn't East Germany proudly beat West Germany in 74? I think the fix was the West Germany v Austria contrived draw in the 1982 World Cup which knocked out Algeria

Senility creeping in there I'm afraid.

I think I got the story right in a round about way.

yes - but hardly "poor Austria"!
