Hello! What was the first sitcom on TV?

Hello all Wave

What was the first sitcom on TV?

Thanks.

Hello! And no idea...

Hello there!

The first sitcom was called Pinwright's Progress. :)

Was it about two losers sharing a flat?

Nope, it was about a shop, Macgillygally's Stores, owned by J. Pinwright.

Kind of a precursor to Are You Being Served?, I believe.

When?

1652.

Haha, not quite.

It was broadcast over the winter and spring of 1946-7.

I was always under the impression that Family Affairs was the first half-hour British sitcom

Actually the question just asks what was the first sitcom so doesn't specify which country - so it was most likely an American show.

Family Affairs was 1949 but Michael Mills, the producer, wrote in Michael Norden's "Coming to You Live" book in 1985 that he was involved in the first British sitcom. Pinwright's Progress preceded it by 2 years but was rarely mentioned in any British TV History books until Tise put it in his book. I suppose Michael Mills could have been bigging his own show up. Always controversy in television history ;)

Entirely possible - but of course the definition of 'sitcom', and indeed of 'comedy', differ wildly from person to person, so in his own mind he could have been correct.

Of course, given the very limited scope of the medium then, it seems to me highly likely that he would have been involved with both.
