It's rare but salesmen can tell the truth (like a Irishman being sober).

Soooo, where's this you work? :D

(My Dad works in the TV industry. He finds it quite amusing to hear the crap that salespeople come out with. I hope you're one of the few who don't spout bollocks!)

Haha. nah, it's the family business so we have to not talk bollocks in order to be able to compete with Currys. :P

Ahhh ok, I seeee. Sounds like quite a fun business to be in!

*looks around room filled with trade price gadgets*

:D I reeeeeeally want a sexy 50" plasma. Can you help?

Well, I took the plunge, and Alan's advice, and got a Pioneer with a hard drive. I've been trying it out over the weekend, and I'm delighted with it. It's very easy to use, and I find the HDD is absolutely essential - I don't know how I made do with my HDD-less Panasonic for as long as I did. You can record off-air, or your old tv vhs tapes onto the hard drive, edit out the ads etc. and then just press copy and it does a fast copy onto a dvd-r, or dvd+r. Brilliant.

I'm aware that on some of the techy sites, people have commented on the shortcomings of the panasonic encoding, with introduces 'mosquito noise' on recordings with fast movement, the colours are a bit pale, and the black is really a dark grey. Now I can compare it to another brand, I agree. Recording one of my favourite vhs tapes onto the pioneer I was shocked to see brighter colours, a clear picture and a lack of vhs noise, even at MN15, which is the 3 hr mode.

It's the Pioneer DVD-HX550 which I got from a local shop for £239. Probably cheaper on the internet, but I'm happy with the price as it's excellent. Anyone thinking of getting one is definitely pointed in this direction.

Funnily enough, I hear that in the US, manufacturers are dropping models with HDDs in them because PVRs and the equivalent of sky boxes are so cheap, and are taking over the market. Presumably most people don't archive stuff.

Hurrah, welcome to my world :)

I wonder how many Alans we have on here?

Yes, HDD recorders are excellent.

Ah I remember answering your questions via my nephew JayN - it was during my exile.
