I've got something to tell you...

With thanks to Leevil.

INT. A SUBURBAN LIVING ROOM.

MUM AND DAD ARE SAT ON THE SOFA. THEIR SON IS SAT ON A POUFEE IN FRONT OF THEM.

SON

Mum, Dad, I've got something to tell you.

DAD

I think we have suspected for a while now, son.

MUM (CHOKING DOWN A SOB)

We just want you to know, that we'll always love you, no matter what. Isn't that right?

DAD

Course it is.

SON

Thanks, I needed to hear that. You're making this really easy for me. Yes, I'm adopted.

MUM AND DAD LOOK BLANK.

DAD

Come again?

SON

I'm adopted. It is such a relief to be able to tell you.

MUM

But, dear...

SON

Mum. (CLUTCHES HER HAND) I want you to know that I have always loved you as if you were my own parents. (TAKES HIS DAD'S HAND AS WELL) And I'm very proud of you.

DAD (BLOWS AIR OUT THROUGH HIS MOUTH)

It's a lot to take in.

SON

It is.

MUM (WIPING A TEAR)

We will always think of you as our real son.

DAD

That's right, (WITH EMPHASIS) son.

SON

Thanks. But if you do want to find out who your natural children are, I will understand. (STANDS) I'll just go make us a cuppa.

SON LEAVES.

DAD

You okay?

MUM

Yes, it's shock, but...

DAD

At least he isn't...?

MUM

Quite.

DAD

I know.

MUM

I was sure he was going to tell us he was black.

END

Hahaha. Love the punchline.

The rest seems pretty familiar somehow. Not sure if I've seen a similar sketch somewhere or it's just some odd form of deja vu.

Ha! Good punchline! Was expecting gay, but you surprised me, sorry for underestimating you.

I laughed out loud at the punchline, brilliantly unexpected.

The familiarity might be because the "I'm adopted" line came up in the 'Embarrassing things you wouldn't tell your parents' thread in General Discussion. But if Leevil and I could could both hit on it, it is not unlikely that it has been used as the basis of a sketch before. I am never entirely sure when I am being inspired or subconsciously plagiarising.

Glad people liked the punchline anyway.

Yeah, it's a nightmare, isn't it? The seeming-to-be-about-to-admit-to-being-gay-but-then-not thing has definitely been done before but the telling his parents that he is adopted just rang a little bell.

You're right though, a lot of comedy is extensions of things or reversing them so no reason it shouldn't have been used before and no reason it shouldn't get used again. It's a good sketch and worth sending off somewhere if that's what you do with them.

For the moment I am writing as therapy, but if ideas for sketches keep coming I am thinking I might try to do something with them.
