Sky Captain, Star Wars 1-3, King Kong, Polar Bear Express, Final Fantasy ect.. the list goes on. It is simply very easy for a movie using CGI to become about the CGI over the characters. Yes I've seen some success stories (in some cartoons and LotR) but those films and programs took a lot of caution and restraint. Just because you can do something in a movie doesn't mean you should. In a film (not an animation) CGI should only be used in a supportive role, when it takes center stage it ruins the movie.
When I see CGI like the jungle swinging I think "well there you go, the director got what he wanted to show us...can we now move onto the actual movie".
You also have to take into consideration that Spielberg was downplaying the use of CGI in the movie. I think that says a lot.
I watched a behind the scenes making of thingymajig earlier, and they explained that he specifically refused CGI and demanded that all of the sets and whatnot be real.

That's made me want to watch it again. Fact I think I will. It still looks impressive and that's such an old film now. Bet it took them a long time to make that sequence.
I saw this last night and thought it a real washout.
**SPOILERS -- SERIOUSLY, TONNES OF SPOILERS**
As to the subject of CGI in movies, people forget that Raiders wasn't devoid of CGI. Same goes for Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. And when it's seamless no-one complains. No-one even notices. The automatic writing part of Crystal Skull was achieved by CGI. Did that bother anybody? What's upsetting is when you start peppering your movie with commie hating monkeys and dramatic chipmunks (seriously, what way to open a movie was that?). Far more of a problem than CGI was the script. In the first major action sequence we see a scene stolen from Malcolm in the Middle where Indy inadvertently finds himself on a nuclear test site. From that point on the stakes are reduced to zero. How can we possibly be worried for a guy's safety when he's already survived an atom bomb? And did anyone else notice that Indy pronounces nuclear, "Nukiller"? And the man's a tenured professor? Oh well, I expect it won't hurt Spielberg any. If anything I expect Lucas to take the flak for Crystal Skull for holding up production so long and mooting a fine script by Frank Darabont in favour of one about little green men. The tit.
It's tragic to say that this Indy movie was no 'The Mummy'.

I was so excited for this movie I had a countdown on my computer, I wore my Indy hat, jacket and even shirt, pants and shoes while waiting in the lineup.
I continuously tried to give the movie the benefit of the doubt but overall I have to say I have NEVER been so disappointed in a movie. It was everything I didn't want to see rolled into one. It was terrible terrible terrible.
I am officially ranking it as my #1 most hated movie of all time.
I hate you George Lucas....I hate you so very very much.

Yeah, Im fine with that too, its CGI monsters and characters I hate.

It's not public knowledge as Darabont is bound to a confidentiality agreement, but it is know that it was set in the same era and didn't involve space aliens.
I haven't seen it yet, but don't have much choice as Bandage jnr is vibed to flip about Indiana Jones after the BBC showed the first three movies.
A friend of mine who has seen it and is an Indiana Jones obsessive said it really misses the quiet talky bits that gave the first and third their heart.
I'm really looking forward to seeing it now. *puts on sarcastic face*
