Can the Americans really do comedy? Page 3

David!

That's like not watching any British sitcoms because you don't like 'Two Pints of Lager'.

Curb Your Enthusiasm and Friends are about as far away from each other as two sitcoms can possibly get.

Love AD, that's all i've got to say for now. Oh, I need to get Series 3 on dvd.

I must admit there are so many sitcoms to try and you can't watch them all. Friends - if you hadn't noticed - I find a reall turn off along with its spin offs so maybe I'm a bit prejudiced and have never watch Curb or Arrested. Am I really missing something good or am I right in thinking that if I don't like Friends etc I won't like these?

They are both absolutely miles apart from Friends, you couldn't find two more different type of sitcoms. Curb and Arrested Development for one don't have a laughter track and studio audience, secondly they are much smarter and well thought out than Friends and have much much more laughs. I really urge you to check them out. With AD though you really need to start from the beginning, you can't just watch one random episode because you'll just be confused.

And if you want to see how good the Americans are at sketch shows check out Mr Show with Bob and David, it was a brilliant sketch show from the 90's with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross who have both been in AD, David plays Tobias.

OK Zooo. I'll give it a chance ...if I'm in and there's nothing else on ... and I can be bothered. Or if I'm not spending time on these forums.

Humour's a very personal but also a very national thing and people are good at convincing each other what's hot and what's not. Remember 'The Cosby Show'? So tacky yet a Yankee institution.

If you do start to watch AD, stick with it, because I watched it when it first started on BBC2 and thought, "There's no jokes in this?". How wrong I was. Finally caught it on DVD just recently and now consider it to be one of the best written things I've ever seen. Nearly every line is a joke, but their not just throw away lines, they add to the story and character development throughout the show.

And it's just so f**king clever and a bit silly at the same time.

I did enjoy the Cosby Show. It was funny - well written, Cosby himself was naturally funny and most of the characters you could sympathise with. Also there never seemed to be any reference to colour in it. It was just FUNNY!

I used to like The Cosby Show too. But why were they called the Hunckstables or something when it's The Cosby Show?

It's like all those bloody stupid yanks shows.

Dick Van Dyke Show
Mary Tyler - Moore Show

Can't think of a funny name - just have to put the "star"s name so everyone knows.

For the same reason The Phil Silvers Show was Bilko. Just a vehicle for the star.

Much like I said in the "Why are the yanks funnier than us brits" thread, I'm happy we're stealing your shows, because it seems to be improving the intelligence of the American sitcom crowd.

For all of you who have not seen Arrested Development, get the DVD's, take a couple hours, and watch a few episodes. It's almost unreal how clever this show was.

Horribly, I cannot decide which I love more - Friends or Arrested Development. They're both in my top5 American sitcom list.

What does it make me?

Arrested Development!!!!!!!!!!

I love Friends, but it's a piddle of crap compared, lol, well that's probably going too far but still AD is greater.

8 Simple Rules, Rodney and Becker are quite good. Not ha ha funny, but fun all the same.

Yeah Friends is no comparison to AD. Friends is good-looking, middle-class folk worried about relationships, thats about as much depth that it had (not saying its shit, it is funny in places).

AD is far superior in every way, brilliantly written characters, clever plotlines and just steeped with layer upon layer of gags. Could've become one of the best sitcoms ever if Fox hadn't of cancelled it...idiots. We may get a movie of it though :)
