Ian: You apply. Sometimes months in advance, sometimes weeks, sometimes a couple of days. If you get tickets, you go there, and as Ellie says, because they're free there are inevitable no-shows and they have to issue more tickets than seats to ensure a full audience.
Occasionally shows do charge though. ISIHAC, I think it was, charge something stupid like £25 each. One of the Radio 4 old-school shows does anyway.
Sooo yeah. They're mostly all free.
And time depends on the show, and how long beforehand you get there. To give you an idea though, at HIGNFY last week we arrived, er, about 5:15 or so, and left at about 10:15 ish. So it's not a pop-in-on-your-way-home affair.

Bloody hell! I think I'd rather it was a paying venue so at least you're certain of getting a seat. It's OK if you live fairly locally, but a bit of a gamble/polava(sp) if you live far away over the rainbow.
Thanks though Aaron.
Well, if you live far away, you're likely to be taking the whole day off work, and arriving in town earlier in the day, thus there being no real problem in arriving early.
But yeah. Quite.
For those interested, you can keep up-to-date with the new episodes via Wikipedia.

Unless it's Karen Taylor in which case you can sit where you like.
I bought a bunch of 12-DVD boxes, and I'm gonna use 'em!

There's precious little in the way of decent promo photos for QI, so I wound up using much of the back of the official S1 DVD, but would love to change it. The front ("remixed" from caricatures used for the cover of The Book Of General Ignorance) I like to think of as the rehearsal for the Santa opening from the E series Christmas episode.
I found the adorable dolls on the spine on Flickr, made by a woman who's done hosts of them, all for equally offbeat celebrity choices:

...oh, and all of this is by way of congratulating the BSG/BCG team for the new in-depth QI pages...they're marvellous. (But no hi-rez promo photos! Waaah!)
The QI recording I went to you wouldn't want hi-res images from; they had a streaker.
A *streaker*? Was it the 70s episode, or something?
(And, unless the streaker was Alan Davies, you're probably right that I wouldn't want them. Would NOT want to see any of the rest of them--Jo Brand, Johnny Vegas spring to mind--"streaking". Ewww.)
Yep, a streaker. Nasty, pasty, flabby ginger guy ran down from the audience, then went and wrapped his arms around Stephen.
Worryingly, Stephen looked uncomfortable in a pretending-not-to-know-who-this-person-is way. :/
The Travails Of Stephen Fry, Chapter 32.
Ah, bless, as himself'd say...
I went to the recording last night. If you want to know about the basics of the night, you can read it here. It was a fun night and it was nice to meet fans and the people behind the show. I am writing a review of the episode for the "QI Talk" blog so you can get a more in-depth guide to it.

Lucky!
Not just for going to see the show, but for being an Ian W as well
Erm. Great information and all Ian, but is it not just a tad silly to be entering all of that info now? Certainly when I attended, the broadcast order didn't reflect the recording order!
Relatively easy enough to copy the info over once broadcast I suppose... But yeah.

I know, but I think it is best to include all the information and keep the database up-to-date. It can all be changed if it needs to be.
