Do you ever feel you've forgotten what's funny? Page 4

I'm sorry... I've no wish to be offensive but if you can't see the funny in old ladies then you're in the wrong business...

I would argue that seeing funny in something without context is a weakness.

and bearing in mind you posted a TV sketch for critique littered with dialogue designed for radio, I'll take your opinion on my chosen profession with a pinch of salt :P

That's your choice... But that's why I post stuff, to see if it works, find out where I'm going wrong and learn from it, being willing to learn shouldn't invalidate a persons a persons opinion where as proclaiming you know what is and isn't funny, full stop, should...

This thread has given me an idea for a sketch!

Just make sure it doesn't include anything obviously funny...

I have said that an object or person in issolation is not funny and that it takes good writing to create a context in which it is - and that such writing could therefore take ANY object or person and make them equally funny.

You have said old ladies are funny.

Considering the above, is your last post not damaging to your own point?

Kjs thinks all old ladies stink of urine too, don't you Kjs? :D :D

No...

Bushbaby is funny, she's an old lady, ergo, old ladies are funny (whether she smells of piss or not I don't know, but that would be funny as well if she did.)

So lets get this straight... any object can be funny with good writing, and even the "funniest" objects, can be unfunny with bad writing? Jolly good.

I think M Lewis is just having a bad day :)

Where's the love people?

Any day when the conclusion is that my view is correct is a good enough day for me.

Wait a minute, old ladies are funny?!

In what context, just in general? So everytime you see an old lady you start laughing? Surely the old lady doing something provides the funny?

I think I agree with M Lewis though, it's the writing about the object that makes it funny, not just the object alone. To make a very poor example, a Chav falling over = funny.....a Chav just stood doing nothing = not funny.

All old ladies are funny by the very fact they are old ladies, they can't help they just are.

Magaret Thatcher = Funny
Dame Helen = Funny
Edith Sitwell = Funny
Eunice my Neighbour = Funny
Bushbaby = Funny
Mary Todd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wgzv-P3p-XU = Funny

The list is endless, well not endless, obviously there is a finite number of old ladies...
