Much as I am a fan of DS9, I have lived on Vulcan for some years now. A planet that gave up on the concept of money some time ago. My NR earnings go towards my Kholinar lessons, when I will finally lose all connection to my emotional life.
Except for my sense of irony. I will be the most ironic person in the entire Federation of Planets.
Oh now that is the ultimate cuss. Both on me and her, the poor woman can't help not understanding the concept of irony.
Can't help understanding the concept of irony, pedantry stalks these forums like the Tiger of Blake's fever dream.
Not you in particular, I to have worn the pedants hat.
I always liked that song, and thought it was weird anal how people bang on about irony.
I think she herself said, it's a good rhyme get over it.
And 3 lovely ginger Alanis's in the same car, I may need to lie down for a bit.
Quote: Griff @ April 21 2008, 10:05 PM BSTHey I wasn't pedanting you. I was raising the spectre of the "Is Alanis talking bollocks about irony in her song" debate, which is long and complex. Anyway, as Baldrick tells us, irony is easy, it's just like bronzy and goldy but not as shiny.
The song *does* unerringly give proper examples of irony, just not in the ways people tend to assume. I mean, if you're unsure, look up irony in the dictionary! It can pretty well just mean "unexpected".
Of course, if we're all aware that the song is nonsense then maybe that's dramatic irony...!
It really annoys me the way this thread has gone. Seriously, what kind of forums is this?
Babylon 5 was way better than any star trek spin off. And the new Battlestar Gallactica is the best thing on TV ever. This isn't opinion I can prove it with the aid of a cricket bat for anyone who doubts it.
As for Alanis, I would. I'm shallow.
Quote: Griff @ April 22 2008, 3:25 PM BSTBattlestar Galactica is ace.
I'm watching the knock off version, two L's. Gallactica is a painted washing-up liquid bottle with a sparkler stuck in the end.
I'm watching it on my Panaphonic television, which sits next to my Somy Ploystation.
I got me job back, eyyyy.
B5 was always weaker than DS9, but it had it's moments in season 2-4. But the dialogue may have been the worst thing written since Mein Kampf.
I love BSG all 3 variants.
