An Honest Question. Page 7

wow. rather intrigued as to what has unfolded here. not intrigued enough to go back and read seven pages though. Don't suppose anyone would care to summise?

A point of view was expressed, an alternative offered. A debate ensued in typical Internet fashion (and that's no bad thing). As the debate developed it became clear that one side was losing the argument aside from the occasional opportunity where they were able to highlight grammatical errors in the postings of their opponent.

Once it became clear that the odd typo wasn't going to see them emerge with the upper hand they went back and deleted all their posts and claimed the whole experience pointless and beneath them.

It was a little like hearing Eddie the Eagle suggest he'd never been to Calgary.

Summarise your thesis Mister Lewis and the opposing thesis.

So we can all be clear.

Are you serious? My thesis is laid out in the preceding 7 pages and the opposing one was deleted. You cant really want me to summarise the points i have already made or those which were the opinion of someone else and no longer available????

Oh for god's sake.
It's getting like a couple of 12 year old boys having a wanking competition in here.

(don't get aroused, anyone...)

Wanking competition? What kind of boys do you know zooo?

Ah, you haven't lived, Gavin.

I don't know what happened but can't we just learrrrn to geddalong?

Group hug!!!

yes I am serious.

As you said yourself in the previous post - A point of view was expressed, an alternative offered.

Never mind the seven pages, like I said - what is your thesis, and what was the opposing thesis you objected to?

And hugginng zooo meanwhile ;)

Is that biscuit of your's soggy Gavin?

It's on those pages, thats how reading and writing works.

Mr Lewis - your attitude in the last few pages is not winning people to your cause, which seems contrary to your professed aim. Less of the attitude, please kind sir, it makes my job easier ... and yours.

A honest answer to an honest question?

We choose our own path. We choose the one we feel is right for us. No amount of internet alley face-offs will convince the other party that they are dead right to post in Crit or to keep their best stuff.

Please people don't delete posts - it's a sod to work out what happened. It's always best to post knowing you can live with what you've written two weeks from now. So think before posting, and post when you're nice and calm and not boiling up like Etna. :P

The quotes really screwed up in the first part so I can't work out who was using the [sic] but it was poor Internet technique. Highlighting an opponent's typing errors is illogical. You aren't proven right because of an opponent's missing tractable apostrophe, you're proven right based on the content of your argument. Else intellectual debate would just be a glorified Spelling Bee. Plus it's not a clever thing to do because after ridiculing spelling, you're going to find your own spelling errors come back to haunt you - guaranteed. In a debate, spelling proves nothing. It reveals nothing more about a personality other than they may have a slightly dodgy keyboard.

So at the end of this debate not a single person from the Red or Blue camp has swapped sides under the force of the other side's arguments. Why? Because here we're dealing not with logic but with personalities. Some people won't post their best stuff, or even any of their work, because of who they are as personalities. Likewise the contrary group. When it comes to differences in personality, logic doesn't work.

We aren't placed here to make everybody conform to our vision. Whether we agree with their P.O.V or otherwise, we have to respect the idea that disagreement with our stance is not only expected but allowable. Live with it ... or live with an ulcer. :)

And if anyone disagrees with my opinion, I'll twat you with cudgel until you do. Laughing out loud

Same with edits, presumably. (Other than immediately after the post to sort out typos not noticed in the little box.)

Preferably - I tend to use edit if I spot a mistake or if the post isn't clear and is going to get read the wrong way :)

Just a quick note to say I really enjoyed this spat. It was like watching two bald men fight over a comb. My one general observation, echoed by others, is that over confidence and arrogance is a really unnattractive quality.
