Last night, I went to my local arts centre to watch the film Juno. It wasn't the best film I'd ever seen, but I'm not here to discuss that. Instead I want to get geeky and talk about the quality of the print which was in the projector at the arts centre.
About half an hour into the film, I noticed the goddamn boom mic hovering at the top of the screen. Yes, that's right! The film crews goddamn boom mic. It kept hovering in and out of shot! It completely ruined the illusion of film. This happened in several other scenes and I knew something was up!
My friend, who I went with, explained afterwards that it wasn't one huge blooper. It was something to do with this particular print of the film not being cropped correctly before it was sent out. It's something mildly complicated to do with films being shot in 4:3 ratio and then the print being cropped into 16:9 ratio.
My friend also pointed out that he'd never ever seen it before. I'd never even heard of it. Anyone else seen this before? Can anyone explain in simple terms what happened with this print?!
