Going to see stand-up Page 2

Richard Keith Herring, the Someone Likes Yoghurt tour. Great blog, too.

Oh, and Ardal O'Hanlon at the Liverpool Neptune. Made me cough a lung up through my nose.

I heart his blog.
And Emma Kennedy's too.

You shouldn't read one without the other.

Another vote for Mack, now Mick mentions it. The guy live is one of the funniest people I've ever seen. It's manic and brilliant.

Dan

Mack was better than Rob Deering. My sides were genuinely hurting when I left that show, as were those of the 5 other people I went with. Manic and brilliant sums up his live show perfectly.

I saw Lee Mack live a few years back and thought he was very funny. He did a great bit at the end where he took questions from the audience and he handled them all excellently. I've seen him on TV a few times and he appears to be very manic on stage, but he wasn't when I saw him.

Jack Dee is by far the funniest standup I have seen to date.

Of course, I've only seen a few, but still.

I don't find Jack Dee as funny as I did in the 90s.

I've never seen him live though, just on TV / DVD's

The same thing happened with Eddie Izzard. I used to really like him back in the day, but I'm not that bothered about him now.

Ditto Winterlight.

Ben Elton in his prime. That funny little Irish guy whose on everything these days. Not really a standup, but Pappy's Funclub at their first Edinburgh run.

Ben Elton in his prime was astonishing. No warm up, no funny voices, but for 2 hours commanded an audience. Timing, writing, energy he was alike a $6,000,000 man of comedy.

I saw Ben Elton a year or so ago (okay, not his prime) and he's was absolutely shit. Really hackneyed stuff, laughter free. And he was total wanker to boot.

Terrible stand up.

Best stand-up: Stewart Lee (seen at RWL a few times now). Awesome and very clever.

He can subvert the genre like no other, really clever. Probably the most intelligent comic out there.

He's still brilliant I think, saw him a few years back.

Though not quite as good as his mid-90s peak. His 90s stuff is pure brilliance.

He's ace.

Really sharp, and a great entertainer. Never stops for the whole show, I thought he was totally manic, funnily enough!

Some of the ad-lib stuff I saw him do was brilliant.

Am I only one who thinks Jack Dee is a bit like Jerry Seinfeld doing stand up, all the tried and tested jokes... the same sort of thing.

"Don't you hate airline food?" You know?

Not that they're bad at what they do, I laugh, just I prefer comics with a bit more of an edge to them.

There's something in that - but both Dee and Seinfeld are masters of what they do. It's an easy genre to take the piss out of, but it's one few get truly right.

I can't comment on Seinfeld, but I certainly didn't get that impression when I saw Dee.

I know what Paul means, but then I also agree with Seefacts reply.

Fencesitter!

Dan

Touché.

The stand up who made me laught the most, was Simon Day, from The Fast Show. Oh, and as for Jack Dee, he is the most overrated stand up in the country. He just personifies the word Mediocre.
