Spoof films?

Just wondering what any of you could recommend along the lines of films like Airplane?

My favourites include;

Airplane
Young Frankenstein
Naked Gun(s)
Loaded Weapon(s)
Hot Shots

Damn, I've drawn a blank, any ideas?

I'm not too keen on modern ones like Scary Movie and especially Epic Movie Sick which seem to just copy stuff identical and forget to include any jokes.

Also, anyone know the genre of these types of movie? I've always called them 'spoofs'.

Would you include mockumentaries... if so Number 1 has to be This is Spinal Tap...

kjs

Police Academy? You're probably aware of them, though.

Wow I had completely forgotten about those Loaded Weapon movies.
The Wayans bros (who did Scary Movie) did make some pretty funny spoofs like "Don't be a Menace to Society while Drinking your Juice in the Hood" and "I'm Gonna Get you Sucka" although neither can say they stand the test of time like most of the films you mentioned.
Probably my favorite Mel Brooks spoof is "Spaceballs". I've seen it to many times to count.
Blazing Saddles is also pure gold.
Austin Powers is considered a spoof too and I loved those flicks.

I thought 'Spinal Tap was OK. Had some good jokes in, but I wasn't rolling about on the floor laughing. Whilst I'll admit it was a pioneering film for that genre, it's not that classic in my books.

I was actually really disappointed with Spaceballs, I love John Candy but this film did nothing for me, maybe because I'm not a Star Wars fan, I dunno?

I've seen the early Waynes Brothers movies, they were OK, but yeah, nothing special.

Austin Powers is a good suggestion, I never think of that as the same, but I suppose it is.

Haven't got around to watching Blazing Saddles yet, I'm a fool yes. Although I'm sure I saw it as a kid?

Yep.

Spinal Tap - Very very poor.

Blazing Saddles - Watch it now.

Austin Powers - Immense. Best in the 'spoof film' genre for me.

However... The (later) Pink Panther films were also spoofs, much in the same way as Austin Powers.

Ah yes, Pink Panther was great.

I want to see the new Get Smart movie, after "acquiring" the first episode of the tv series, and with Steve Carel taking the lead, it should be good.

How can people not find Spinal Tap one of the funniest films ever... It must be a generational thing... I can only assume a lot of you never saw Hawkwind/Yes/Judas Priest et al in full on ROCK GOD mode...

The performances are great, the jokes are good, the concept is great. But I think there are better, sorry, funnier films.

Don't worry KJ, you aren't going mad. In my book Spinal Tap is unquestionably one of the funniest films of all time, and definitely a contender for "Best in Genre". My guess is you are right and that the naysayers are of younger ilk and don't recognise its qualities as much.

Bah! I love Young Frankenstein, which spoofed something from the 1800s!

I'm also writing a music history based sitcom at the moment.

I just think you maybe looking at it through rose-tinted glasses.

1930s, I think. Unless the Lumiere bros invented the time machine as well as cinema.

Of course! But what glasses are you using? Shit-tinted? I remember seeing Tap in 1986 and being blown away, and I'm still blown away by how funny I have found it on repeat viewings. The only other spoof film that I can still watch repeatedly is the original Airplane! - but for me, that loses to Tap because the latter sticks more rigidly to its own genre of mockumentary, whereas Airplane goes off on tangential sketches (which are great, by the way, but not as cinematic... he said like a ponce).

Airplane II: The Sequel. Also the film Kentucky Fried Movie includes a great Enter the Dragon spoof!

Lol, I took it further back to make my point seem more so, I was thinking of the book. Pleased
