I've only seen the first episode of Torchwood but the pluses you gave for the science fiction are the exact reason I disliked the show so much. It seemed to me to be nothing more then an action/drama with a tired idea with some aliens stuck in.
It's not the people that's the problem. We (well, I, and I assume zooo) am/are perfectly happy with the elves and whatnot in Harry Potter. It's the world that it's set in that's the problem. Because it's entirely fictional, we have no grounding of ab/normality, for example. It just doesn't work. We don't want 'their' world. We want 'ours' - hence the love of Torchwood.
Although, being someone who thinks that they're French, we can understand your wanting to escape from reality...

Anyway Curt, that's still not the point. We don't give a f**k about explaining our world through other worlds. We don't want no stinkin' allegory or pretentious wankery. If we did, then a new world is more than pretentious enough.
