But he's got a little willy, you saw it with yer oon eyes!

Aaron, you hate lord of the rings? But... You're a geek, you're the master of the geeks, it's against your code to not like LOTRs.

LOTR isn't geeky. It's just sad.

She blamed it on hardly ever seeing him, due to Dr Who filming.
Which is rubbish, cos he's hardly doing any next year.
And anyway, hardly ever seeing him is better than never ever seeing him. Teary

Ah well, her loss your gain. All you need to do is track him down and follow him around.

Quote: Aaron @ April 6 2008, 11:41 PM BST

Oh, I expected it - doesn't make your tastes any less odd IMO though!

Yey Aaroni! Where have you been?
I thought Mark had banned you. Zooo was worried you'd fallen off a castle!

Quote: zooo @ April 6 2008, 2:06 PM BST

I for one hate almost anything with dragons and swords and mystical lakes and all that bobbins.

I can still qualify as a geek though, right...? Teary

Except Harry Potter, obviously!

And yes, of course you do! *hug* You're like, High Priestess of the Geeks or something! :)

There is more to fantasy and sci phi then mixing it with comedy. You guys are really missing out.

than*

And I don't remember anything about mixing with comedy? :S

I like science fiction that has a root in reality. Like Aliens or whatever, real people from real life, doing unusual things.

Not midget weirdos in fantasy land doing unusual things. Where's the bit I'm supposed to identify with?

Awww! We are at one! Exactly what I was going to say. And exactly what I like about Harry Potter. It's all based in our 'real' world, just a side of it that we don't see. I don't have time for any of this Middle Earth bollocks!

Quote: Curt @ April 6 2008, 5:42 PM BST

How about the characters themselves? Just because they don't look like you doesn't mean there isn't something familiar in them to identify with that you can use to move forward into their world with.
Also if you do get a chance Zooo to read "A Game of Thrones" uses only humans and doesn't really use magic but it has a lot of interesting things to say about human interaction between cultures, diplomacy and hierarchy.
I've only seen the first episode of Torchwood but the pluses you gave for the science fiction are the exact reason I disliked the show so much. It seemed to me to be nothing more then an action/drama with a tired idea with some aliens stuck in.

It's not the people that's the problem. We (well, I, and I assume zooo) am/are perfectly happy with the elves and whatnot in Harry Potter. It's the world that it's set in that's the problem. Because it's entirely fictional, we have no grounding of ab/normality, for example. It just doesn't work. We don't want 'their' world. We want 'ours' - hence the love of Torchwood.:)

Although, being someone who thinks that they're French, we can understand your wanting to escape from reality... ;)

He must be a grower, not a shower.

Preeecisely the phrase I was wracking my brain to remember!

Thanks Aaron!

Billie calls him David Teninch, and that's what I'm going with.

:) Maybe one day!

You could always put on a good pair of glasses anyway. Ha! Maybe that's why Aaron thinks he's....never mind! Whistling nnocently

Fantasy uses different worlds to explain our own world, just like science fiction might use the future to explain our selves or society. Creating an original and believable world is as Tolkien says "a rare achievement of Art".

I believe that to be an intellectual post. Ban Curt.

He should know.

Anyway Curt, that's still not the point. We don't give a f**k about explaining our world through other worlds. We don't want no stinkin' allegory or pretentious wankery. If we did, then a new world is more than pretentious enough.
