Awwwwwww! You are gonna make me all gooey again in a minute.
My male spider has a fly in his web now. I am watching as he attackes it. It's like thanatophilia in my very own livingroom. Phwoar!

Aaron, you hate lord of the rings? But... You're a geek, you're the master of the geeks, it's against your code to not like LOTRs.

I for one hate almost anything with dragons and swords and mystical lakes and all that bobbins.

I can still qualify as a geek though, right...? Teary

It is arse when it takes itself too seriously. So is a lot of sci-fi.
You can't be a geek though cos you're a fit latino babe.
Do you like Pratchett btw?

I've never read any! He does have a very tidy beard though.

There is more to fantasy and sci phi then mixing it with comedy. You guys are really missing out.

Oh right, for some reason I had you down as someone who would like him.
He's one of those bastards/writers who churns out books quicker than you can read them - so maybe he doesn't get time to shave, just to trim?

Hmmm, maybe.
But I can't stick fantasy when it's like:

"Behold, I am Zoron, master of the clan of Crockoshit, who have guarded the ancient runes of Tummawumma since the elves...." blah blah, whatever!

On sci-fi, there are some great Bradbury stories, but stuff like Star Trek etc is far too up its own arse.

Good fantasy is still being made today. I dare anyone to read the first book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series (the first book is "A Game of Thrones") and not feel compelled to read the entire series. It's just that good.
I recently had a chance to read the entire "I Robot" collection of stories. It did what a good science fiction should (in my own opinion): use plausible science to explore situations of human morality.
Hey that was pretty good...I should copy write that last part!
And I like Generations, I thought it has some interesting things to say. I also really like the concept of Star Trek and think the core of Gene Roddenberry's idea of how Earth came to this point in the future is fasinating.
Everything else after Generations though (even late episodes) are in my opinion are merely stupid nerd dramas with action.
That's why I haven't written off the new Dr. Who yet, it may be silly at times but it does say some interesting things about our society.

I like science fiction that has a root in reality. Like Aliens or whatever, real people from real life, doing unusual things.

Not midget weirdos in fantasy land doing unusual things. Where's the bit I'm supposed to identify with?

How about the characters themselves? Just because they don't look like you doesn't mean there isn't something familiar in them to identify with that you can use to move forward into their world with.
Also if you do get a chance Zooo to read "A Game of Thrones" uses only humans and doesn't really use magic but it has a lot of interesting things to say about human interaction between cultures, diplomacy and hierarchy.
I've only seen the first episode of Torchwood but the pluses you gave for the science fiction are the exact reason I disliked the show so much. It seemed to me to be nothing more then an action/drama with a tired idea with some aliens stuck in.

Well, that is what it is!

Except the tired bit, naturally.

I'm sure there's a lot of good fantasy style sci fi out there that I haven't seen yet. But if it's ANYTHING like Lord of the Rings, I'm not interested. Those characters are completely un-identifiable with to me. The language, the dialogue. Yuck.
Especially in the films. Not one sentence came out of a character's mouth sounding genuine or unlaboured. Even Shakespeare manages to sound real.

Yeah, I hate people like that.
Bloody prolifics. It's just selfish!

Torchwood = Men in Black. I've seen it, and its knock offs to many times to be interested. But hey I'm no better, I harbor a deep dark secret that I actually watch Stargate Atlantis.Teary I'm so ashamed!

ME TOO! I specifically hate R A Salvator books. The guy churns out an impossible number of books per year and his idiotic fans eat it up.

lol Stargate Atlantis aint all bad two chicks I cant decide if I would or not, Quip man, coward Scientist and big burly predator man oh and Scottish Dr lol

I watch it now and again, but I'm losing interest, I can see what's coming and the characters seem to lose some appeal after a while and I stop caring, the original series was a bit better to be honest.
