Wrong! Personality matters enormously. I suspect most American voters, like you, preferred Trump's personality to Harris's. They either chose to turn a blind eye to Trump's flaws, didn't consider them flaws, didn't believe they existed, were unaware of them or thought the non-white, female, left-wing alternative looked worse.
Which is why the Republicans lost the House of Representatives, the Senate, and loads of Governors; because they weren't Trump.

Boiling it down to a simple narrative that Trump is evil and Americans are idiots may appeal to the lack of knowledge British media shows on US politics (and, frankly, my own sense of humour), but it ignores the reality of the issues that each party is aligning itself with, promising to tackle, and using against the other, not to mention the actual concerns of average American voters. (Which is definitely not the same as the shrieking loons on social media.)
The narrowness of all those Republican victories and gains illustrate there's a hefty divide in their country, narrow but deeply polarising and increasingly toxic. We continue to import it at our peril.
